Re: Placement help pls!!

Honestly, she may do fine with LHFHG if she has the ability to begin writing and to sit and listen to stories without a lot of pictures. My dd started LHFHG just after she turned 4 (she was combined with her older brother) and did great for LHFHG and Beyond. However, when we hit the Bigger guide we ...

Re: Moving from Bigger to Preparing and Technology Questions

Thank you, Melissa for all the helpful information. I will definitely pm you for details regarding technology, as that is not dh's or my field. Regarding the guide, I may start combining day 4 & 5 now, so there will be less than a week left to double up on at the end. That may be easier to handle. T...

Moving from Bigger to Preparing and Technology Questions

I have two questions regarding my oldest son. He is 9 1/2 and we are on week 25 of Bigger. Our original plan was to finish Bigger by the end of September and then start Preparing after a 2 1/2 week trip in October. However, our summer has been so busy that we will be 2 weeks shy of finishing the gui...

Re: Just can't wait to order!

I'm super excited to order as well! I'm making myself wait another week or two though, until I finish decluttering my homeschool cabinet. I want to have a shelf cleared for the Preparing books so that they can be put in their special place as soon as they get here :D !

Re: uncombining update and new baby advice needed

First, I want to encourage you to give yourself lots of grace when that new baby comes. If minimal school gets done for a few months that's ok. My last one was born in the month of October and we took that entire month off. Then, with the holiday months we got a little done, but nothing regular. I j...

Re: Updated: Sneak Peek #1: New American History Guide

This is so many years away for us, but I am totally doing a little happy dance :D :D :D !!! I enjoy reading Dr. Wile's blog and when I learned he was writing a new chemistry book, I was sad that we wouldn't likely get to use it as your high school chemistry selections had already been made. I am sor...

Re: customer service

I believe Carrie, Julie, and their families are at an homeschool convention this weekend in Richmond, Virginia. Since HOD is a family run business, there is currently no one available to return calls. Please let your friend know that if she has left a message, they will return her call as soon as po...

Re: Bigger Extensions

I dont't think it is a lot of extra reading. Usually just a chapter a day and then sometimes a few pages out of A Child's Story of America. My son reads the assigned extensions on his own first thing in the morning, so I'm not exactly sure how long they would take as read alouds, but I imagine 15-20...

Re: The Reading Lesson

I have used TRL with my oldest 2dc. My oldest ds picked up reading easily, so we only regularly reviewed pages through the first part of the program. Then, we did 2-3 pages a day and only repeated stories and key word pages when necessary. Dd started reading earlier than ds and had less attention sp...

Re: Curriculum choice dilemma

Hi there, Prayer is definitely the place to start :D . One thing to consider is who will be teaching? If you are doing the teaching, you really need to choose a curriculum that YOU will enjoy teaching. Also, think of your child's learning style. If you have a wiggly willie or wilma :), lots of conce...

Preparing Extension Questions

Hi Everyone, I am starting to put together my HOD order for fall and am wondering if there are any Preparing extension books that I need to avoid because they are used in later guides? Also, is there any content that might be too mature for a 9.5-10.5 yo.? Ds loves the extension books in Bigger this...

Re: Auditory Processing Disorder and Rhyming

Yes, my ds is 9 and I do think your ds will grow out of it (or into the ability as the case may be:). Any fun activities that can help him along just might make it happen a bit sooner. We did AAR pre-level 1 when ds was 4-5yrs old and the rhyming didn't click at all at that age. Dd always blurted ou...

Re: Auditory Processing Disorder and Rhyming

My oldest ds(9) has auditory processing issues along with Cerebral Palsy and High Functioning Autism. Rhyming is not really a problem for him (processing multiple step instructions and responding in general to verbal instructions are more of an issue). Anyway, we always play word games as a family w...

Re: Stuggling to sound words out phonetically

I found Explode the Code to be really helpful for my dd. We only used the first three books, but I think there are about 8 main books in addition to some half levels if you need more reinforcement. They are fairly inexpensive and can be done mostly independently.
