Re: Handwriting/Copy work question--Beyond
We did Zaner-Bloser Handwriting K in Kindergarten, ZB 1 in a K-1 year and ZB 2M in 1st. The first year, we just concentrated on letter formation, but since then I've always alternated copywork with handwriting practice. Often I'll do one day of handwriting (one page in ZB), followed by one day of co...

Re: Cutting out Poetry for Beyond
Good question! :D The skill being taught within this activity is for children to be able to sequence sentences using a model for guidance. I cut apart by lines first and let him look at the model to put it back together. Later, I cut it apart more, like down the middle vertically to divide individu...

Re: Spelling 2nd grade with Beyond
Bigger has two choices for spelling, either a spelling list (which is the same as the 2nd list in Beyond) or dictation passages. Once a child has mastered the two spelling lists, any further spelling instruction is via dictation.MistyP wrote:Great! Thanks! So, there is not spelling in Bigger??

Cutting out Poetry for Beyond
In, Beyond, one of the poetry recommendations is to cut apart the poem and have one's child put it back together. I was wondering how folks do this. Do you cut it apart line by line or stanza by stanza? Also, should the child be putting the poem back in order by memory, or by looking at the original...

Re: Spelling 2nd grade with Beyond
The grammar is separate from the spelling, so substituting is not a problem. We were in the same boat as you and Carrie recommended using Beyond, but with the Dictation from Bigger.

Re: 4th grade DD places in 1A or 1B Singapore
So should I just work on straight facts then and not use MUS? I like it because they had little tricks, like "9 it wants to be a 10" song. Where if you were subtracting 9, you'd think "subtract 10+1" You use the same principal with 8. Or doubles plus 1 for 5+6, 6+7, ect. But they've been through th...

I cried when I read this. How absolutely precious! I'm hoping for some of these moments in our upcoming year.

Re: 4th grade DD places in 1A or 1B Singapore
Would you recommend I spend time getting her to master her addition through 9+9 and subtraction through 18-9 and then retest her? The Singapore I bought looks just like the stuff here, I purchased it through SL. It suppose to be the exact same stuff. In my experience (I'm a former math teacher), as...

Re: 4th grade DD places in 1A or 1B Singapore
Wow. I want to bury my head in the sand. I just went and checked my order history and I did indeed order 1A and 1B textbooks only. No wonder we couldn't make it work for us! We'd do the HOD activity, then look at the book and think there was nothing to do. I have no idea why I was cer...

The textbooks are in color, but the workbooks are black and white. The front covers all have the same picture, but they'll say either textbook or workbook.

It looks like the first time it is used it Unit 5 - Day 3. Our library had a copy, so that's an option for you to check out. The book is great, so if the library doesn't have it, I'd say it's definitely worth buying when you can.

Re: 4th grade DD places in 1A or 1B Singapore
I wouldn't worry so much about her being behind grade-wise, as I would be with having her placed correctly. If your dd struggles with math, trying to push her ahead to catch up will only frustrate her more. Between Singapore being advanced (some say by a year) and your dd being young for her grade, ...

Question on Phonics
As I'm tweaking our plans for next year, I have a question regarding the "Reading Choices" box of Beyond. We've already started the ERS, so we plan on continuing with that. The question I have is in regards to phonics. I've always heard that one shouldn't stop phonics mid-stream just because a child...

Re: Just had to share!
We're doing LHTH with our 3 year old, too. A few evenings ago, when I was at the kitchen table, persuing the Bigger Hearts manual, my little girl entered the room. When she saw the BIgger manual, her eyes lit up and I could see her thinking. She then ran to our other table, grabbed her LHTH manual a...

Thanks for answering so quickly! Yes, he's had experience with CM. I guess you could say we've been a combination of classical-CM. On one hand, for math, reading and language arts, we've done R&S, which is very textbook oriented. For history, science and literature, we've been big-time Charlotte Ma...
