Re: Strayed from HOD for 1 year and don't know how to get ba

I agree with the other poster. We did RTR and I have all of the MTMM books because we will begin this spring and I think the experience will be different enough it won't matter. There are so many great elements in MTMM that aren't in The Mystery of History. Even with some overlap, it will be present...

Re: Struggling SO much with reading aloud!

When I read your post I thought of a recent post by Carrie that should be helpful. She was addressing the child reading aloud, but it still applies. Honestly, I would stop checking with him during the reading to see if he is comprehending. Interrupting the flow of the reading can be jarring to any l...

Re: Prayer request and question

I will put your son on my prayer list. I am so sorry. I am a member of HSLDA and went to their site and here are couple of things that might help: - 120-180 hours for 1 credit - every question, assignment, and page does not need to be read. 75% is often considered credit worthy, so you could pick an...

Re: Feeling like I can't get it all in...

It can be overwhelming at times and life does get in the way sometimes. I would focus on your Bigger student right now, as it is an important guide for future skills. I know we all feel like we should do something with a 5 yr old, but I would skip it for now and start her in Little Hearts next year....

Re: Help Switching to Heart of Dakota Next Year

I would not do those three guides back to back. Those are the most teacher intensive guides and I think you would be setting yourself up for burnout. With what you have shared I really think your 7-yr-old would be best served in Little Hearts with your 6 yr old. Having gone through the program up to...

Re: Do you feel the need to add anything to HOD?

We have been with HOD from the beginning and are currently in Rev to Rev with my oldest. I can absolutely say HOD is enough. If my college students could write and communicate as well as my 11-yr-old in HOD, I would be so happy (and language arts isn't even his strongest point). The breadth and dept...

Re: Help with Dyslexic Placement

My son is dyslexic and I would advise running the very upper end of the guides. I think Beyond would be a good start for her. Like you said, you can place her in math wherever she fits and keep working on phonics and early reading. Don't hesitate to start out at 1/2 speed so you can devote time to h...

Re: What Bible in LHFHG?

I fully agree with the pp. Use your Bible and know our kids will do much better than we do in memorizing. The texts I know best are the ones I learned as a child.

Re: Placement of a child who is LD

I am wondering if you have looked at the sample week for Bigger at http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/BHFHG-first-week.pdf? HOD has a unique approach in the way the guides are written with much integration of skill sets as children progress. Learning comes alive through the various activities that are...

Re: Question of pace of LHFHG

I am so glad your experience with HOD has been so great! I agree with everything you said. If things are going great I would not change anything. When your daughter is ready for the emerging readers you can definitely begin. You will need the Beyond guide for the schedule and questions that go with ...

Re: Combining Help

I have been pondering your situation for a bit here. I would be really reluctant to jump a child from Little Hearts to Preparing. I think you would lose more than you would gain. Your child would then be running the younger end of the guide without the benefit of the two previous guides. Even if his...

What a great testimony! It certainly isn't always easy, but if we keep the goal in mind and look at the end result it is worth the effort.

Re: Preparing versus CTC?

Based on what you shared I would go Preparing. CTC was a big jump for us and one of the reasons was my son was not a strong writer (as in writing multiple sentences or putting a lot of thoughts on paper). I think Preparing will be perfect and after a year of Preparing she should be able to get the m...

Re: Singapore Math 5A - Algebra?

We just finished 5 A and B and I agree with using the bar graphs at this point. This was also the first time I ordered the HIG as well. This has certainly been an interesting year in math :D, but I love what Singapore is teaching my son.
