Re: It's a little thing, but...
I have looked up these books on Amazon and included them on an Excel spreadsheet I'm taking with me to the convention. Thank you again for the suggestions!

Re: Anyone ever go backwards?
She's actually 7.5 and going into 2nd grade. I looked carefully at LHTHG and it just seems a bit young for her. We have been doing Beyond for a couple of weeks and she loves it so I think we'll keep her there. Also, for the past few days my high schooler has stepped in and started working with her ...

Re: Anyone ever go backwards?
LHFHG is listed as covering ages 5-7. There are 1st grade options in it (although some of them are at the back of the book, so if you really don't want to flip pages, that might not be so good). I think the storytime and history portions could be very appropriate for a first grader.

Re: New -LHFHG for 1st grader and 4 year old?
I think using LHFHG half speed is a great idea. In fact, I'm plotting as I look to 2013... okay, I don't know if it's crazy to plan that far ahead (in other words, yes, it probably is), but I'm thinking about having my son (who will be almost 7) and my daughter (who will have just turned 4) do the l...

Re: Classical Conversations & HOD - who does both?
We did both this past year. I really like the idea of CC for the older grades--the Challenge program. And I thought that CC would check off a lot of boxes for us, if you will. I was looking for, let's see, accountability, socialization, memorization, hands-on science, music, and art. I got all of th...

Re: Anyone ever go backwards?
I'm thinking of doing what FiveLittlePeaches suggested with my youngest two. And the good thing is, if you have Preparing and LHFHG, as well as appropriate materials for your 7 year old's math and LA, you can even get a little bit into the year and figure out where your middle child will combine best.

Re: need input on socializing
We are so blessed to have many hs families in our church, such that we have built in socialization when we need it. But, like you've said, hs families are busy, so real playdates can be hard. Right now I'm considering myself very blessed to have a friend who is also doing Charlotte Mason (but not Ho...

Re: Supplies for Beyond
I was going through and making a supply list until I found this thread. But I can say, the guide does call for masking tape, index cards, and folders, as well as paint, tagboard, brushes.
I almost don't mind being forced to skim through the guide to make a list. It's something I need to do anyway.

Re: Question about CM vs. classical
I wanted to add something that I didn't see mentioned yet--classical education (as I understand it) teaches children according to the Trivium: first, the grammar stage, then dialectic, then rhetoric. This was used by ancient Greeks and Romans. The theory is that from K-6th grade or so, kids are very...

Re: It's a little thing, but...
Thank you for the helpful replies! I will put those books on my shopping list. I think a Cricket in Times Square will be a good choice for us, as well. Pjdobro--I love Watership Down! I also read it in 6th grade, but it is too hard/deep for her age. Some of it is really scary. I mean, I would say it...

My daughter very much wants to see something RABBIT related make its way into the curriculum! We are finishing up LHFHG, which of course had Peter Cottontail as one of the Burgess read-alouds. And the Beatrix Potter book is coming right up! (We are very much doing school this summer.) But what about...

Re: So excited....made my first order!!
I ordered the Beyond guide and some of the materials on a Thursday night and I got it the day after Memorial Day! In Virginia! That's less than two business days! Time has flown since dd and I had our first box day, getting out the LHFHG materials and checking off the packing list together. I'm glad...

Re: Thank You Carrie and Julie for a wonderful Conference
Neat! I've been thinking about how great it would be if Heart of Dakota would come to Virginia to our homeschooling conference. I guess it's a long way to travel, but I think you have a great curriculum that people would find very compelling. A lot of my friends seem to be a bit Charlotte Mason, a b...

Re: More Beyond questions
This year for LHFHG we needed flexibility because of having a baby, errands, a tired mom  , etc. We didn't do the same order every day. I copied the clip-art type icons onto card stock, self-stick laminated them, and put sticky magnets on the back. Thus, a nice batch of HoD magnets to do with...

Re: The reasons behind HoD's choices
I know this is my first post ever, but I want to say this thread is so, so, so good. It should absolutely be a stickie! My daughter and I are finishing LHFHG. It's been a good year, but phonics has been a bit of a struggle. I wish I'd had this information a year ago. If I had read the things this li...
