Using a different Language Arts than what is recommended

Has anyone done this?? In the guides it reads 'or your own program'. I have read enough on this board to know that HOD's recommendations make the flow of the day, that most of you would tell me to consider doing it the way the guide is written. I would really like to hear from anyone who has used so...

Re: If not R&S

Jennymommy - so are you saying let them do the lessons on their own? and not worry about doing it orally with them? For reasons that I do not want to get into here, my husband will not want me to be working with the boys to that extent, doing lessons orally. He knows to well what will happen. I have...

Re: If not R&S

True.... was hoping they could do it without so much of that. It isn't a setup that will work here. They've also been totally independent of me for years (unless the are stumped or something, I'm available for help)

Re: If not R&S

So if we do just through 6 by the end of high school that will give them enough grammar? I really don't want to even try going any further. It's the amount of instruction. My oldest, soon to be 10th grader, has a hard time with *wordy* instruction. I even tried 6 with DS, soon to be 9th gr., at the ...

Re: If not R&S

Just bumping... any responses to this? We are kind of in the same boat... but a little different situation in that my boys will be '9th' and 10'th grade next school year and really just got an understanding of grammar just this year. So... would level 4 be too low to start them? or should we chose 5...

Re: Benefits in using younger guide for high school

I'm thinking skill wise - what skills do they gain or use that will help them in a college setting? (if placed in the younger guides for high school)

Re: Feeling terribly guilty and discouraged..

Burnt out - yes that's how I feel. Totally, utterly burned out. I put Beyond on the shelf and haven't touched it and feel scared to even try HOD again ( we'd been doing just beyond as is except for Math. we were using Teaching textbooks. It wasn't taking long at all. I'd just started the storytime b...

Benefits in using younger guide for high school

Hi, I'm sure there must be SOME benefit that a child would gain by using a younger guide for high school if that is where he places,- could anyone share what they might be?? I am wanting to feel we would be 'missing out' by not using the guides written for high school. They might not be going on to ...

Re: Breaking for Summer

We usually go to the end of May, although a few of the kids will be finishing some of their subjects in a few weeks. We have 2 birthday boys in May, one near Mother's day and the other at the end, so they like to do extra lessons in Math to get done before their birthday :) One of those boys just ma...

Re: Preparing for College with HOD

This all sounds so good... Where does this leave those who are using the younger guides for their high schoolers, If a child actually places best in a younger guide skill wise? Will there be skills learned in those guides that will help them if they WOULD chose go on to a college or community college?

Church History in RtR?

Is there any church history in RtR and if so how much or how deep does it go? Would it be difficult to add it in for a high schooler using the guide?

Re: Feeling terribly guilty and discouraged..

Carrie, Thank you so much for those words of advice, so much wisdom there. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I feel too brain tired right now to have much to say but just wanted you to know I've read it If the fatigue is such that you cannot do Beyond, you may want to consider doing an indepen...

Feeling terribly guilty and discouraged..

A month ago my daughter, who is 8 and was placed perfect in Beyond, was sick for a good week and then after her the three boys all got sick. They've recovered but it had left them all so tired. That's when my DD just lost interest in Beyond. I've tried to find out just what was wrong and why and fin...
