Re: Public School teacher as a home schooler?

When I was teaching I knew if a kid knew the information,... We brought our oldest home for 7th grade and started using a lit based/CM approach beginning in 8th. The wonderful thing about using this approach is you do know if your kid is learning. It's not just memorize a fact, take a test, and mov...

Re: bigger over 2 years?

So, if you slow down Bigger and/or Preparing, do you feel there is enough there? Or do you add in other things? Even doing the 3 R's, I wonder if I would feel like it is enough, although I hear it is quite a big jump from Beyond. I guess I would just have to try it to see. We don't do it on a sched...

Re: bigger over 2 years?

We're using Bigger and Preparing over 3 years, so not quite half speed. For my ds slowing Little Hearts or Beyond down would have been too slow. However, the jump in Bigger was easy enough to slow down. We still do reading and math everyday, so he isn't getting behind there. hth.

Re: Not finishing all of the guides, would it bother you?

it would mean that he would not get to the last year of American History with Eco. How do you work around this issue since I really think that is an important era to cover? We're using Bigger and Preparing over 3 years (3rd-5th), so we may end up in the same boat. I'm not worried about. I'll figure...

Re: Can you do BLHFHG then Bigger over 3 yrs??

We're spreading Bigger and Preparing over 3 years. I'll start Preparing when Bigger is finished in the fall, guessing late Oct-mid Nov. I school the 3 Rs everyday, but the other stuff gets rotated around (some days only doing the 3 Rs and an outside activity, some left side then right side days, oth...

Re: Finish guides in one year??

A guide can be done in a year. We did Little Hearts in less than a year, finished Beyond easily within a year. However, this year we've taken Bigger a bit slower. Ds has outside activities one day per week, plus his independent reading isn't quite where it needs to be. We'll finish the last 10 units...

Re: I need help!

Hello and welcome! Spelling lists, weekly grammar/english lessons, and questions to ask with the emerging readers are included in Beyond. You'll need the emergent readers (or similar set), if your ds places there for reading. Copywork is used for handwriting, or you can use a handwriting program. We...

Agreeing with the others. They're covered in such a way that it's not repetitive. We've loved both, but ds is especially loving Bigger this year.

Re: Looking for some encouragement

I'm in the firm belief that K should involve basic phonics, math and handwriting as the child is ready and lots of being read to. Everything else is a bonus. That said, I'd hold off on LH until you get settled. It's a great 1st grade guide and will relieve some current pressure. Focus on the 3Rs, re...

Sword in the Tree and Apple and the Arrow were huge faves with ds. I loved Sarah Whitcher too.

Re: beyond for 9 yo next fall

Sounds like Beyond would be a good place for her. HOD recommends SPM, but any math will work. We use a different math because we'd already started it when we found HOD. That math works for my ds, so we've stuck with it.
