Re: I'm on the fence and need some advice.

Beyond as written should be fine for a 7.5 y/o. If and when you decide to add R&S to Beyond it should be when ds is ready. It's one lesson a day. I, however, would not worry about high school this early on. Do whatever he's ready for now. High school will work itself out when the time comes. I alway...

Re: Slowing down a 3rd grader

I would probably slow her down to 3 days, continuing math and reading each day. There's lots of other good, fun stuff you can add. Are you using the extensions? You could read them together for fun. Or, looks for more ideas to expand what she's already learning.

Re: Daily guide logistics: How do you keep yours?

I use a binder clip for the day's lesson, I have tabs on the sections in the back. It lays on the kitchen table during school time with our stack of books. When ds checks off his list he usually puts the book(s) away that goes with that subject. It's all kept in the corner of the kitchen, just a few...

Re: Please warn me....

Carrie is good about putting any warning in the box with the assignment. For example, violence of someone being killed, or inappropriate language like calling someone stupid. Her warnings are the main reason I prefer to stick to her suggestions for storytime. I have plenty of good books on the shelv...

Re: Pull son from HOD for next year?

We're using Bigger and Preparing over 3 years, so my ds can grow into them a bit more. His dyslexia may keep him from ever doing the independent boxes independently, I'm ok with that. I wouldn't leave HOD for that reason alone.

Re: Confused Future Homeschooler

I agree with checking placement. My 3rd grader is loving Bigger. We're doing it about 2/3 speed. We'll finish it up for part of 4th grade in the fall. Used with math, reading and LA at the 4th grade level I think Bigger would work fine for most 4th graders. I'd try it as written, add extensions if y...

We skim back over his science lab sheets and notebooking pages when we add new ones. Plus, we talk about subjects as they arise.

Re: "Igniting your writing"?

I can't answer the other questions, but my oldest used IYW. It worked well for him. It gave him the skills, practice and confidence to be a better writer.

Re: Preparing for 2nd (8 in Aug) and 4th (10 in Jan) Grader

I agree with placing your younger and adding extensions for your older. The guides are written to use that way. We're using Bigger this year and it really is a great guide! Or, let your 4th grader use Preparing and place your 2nd grader in Beyond. The left side of Beyond doesn't take long and since ...

Re: Another cursive question

I would give her another year of printing. In my opinion, she should be able to print well on wide-ruled notebook paper first before switching to cursive. I also suggest stretching Bigger over two years, since she is so young. There is quite a bit of notebooking in it, which may be challenging for ...
