Re: Week-in-Review Feb. 16-20, 2015

Looks like a great week at your house Julie! M oldest DD worked on units 15 and 16 in Res-Ref. I was pleasantly surprised at the science for the week. We learned about the different layers of our atmosphere and the jobs they have and how we benefit from them. It was really fun to learn about what ca...

Julie,
I've always enjoyed seeing what your boys are doing since it gives me a glimpse of what we'll be doing soon. Though I forget to take pictures too often. One of these days I'll figure out the technology to get pictures posted (once I remember to take a picture!).

Re: Questions on combining

Welcome to HOD! Have you checked where each child places on the placement chart? http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php I find it's helpful to see what skills each child has first. Then it's easier to think about who can be combined. It also helps the ladies here understand what skills ...

How wonderful! Makes me wish we were there already. I'll have to remember your sons technique of watching first when we get to that guide.

Re: Three kids combining - share books or get their own

Is there a way you can stagger their schedules to allow them each a time period to use the books? Such as one is allotted 9-10 to have the science book while another has that 9-10 slot to have the independent history. Maybe you could get away with only 2 sets of books instead of 3?

Re: curriculum for multiple ages

If you are saying that your 11 year old is a 6th grade level over all, I don't think I would feel comfortable trying to combine a 6th grader with a 1st an 2nd grade level. (That's roughly the levels I have in my house. 6th and 2nd/3rd) Your 6th grader will be doing middle school work for the next fe...

Re: curriculum for multiple ages

If you are willing to split the kids into 2 groups, then you may have come to the right place. HOD has very little teacher prep. (I spend a max. 10 minutes each night going over what I will be doing the next day for 2 guides. Then about 10-15 minutes once every 3 or 4 weeks scanning for items to add...

Re: When does Spelling get better?

My dyslexic daughter started doing better about spelling when we let her start typing her work. Since the computer will underline the incorrect word, it helped her see it as wrong right away. Then the computer offers suggestions. Of course, sometimes she picks the wrong word. She started doing compu...

Re: How to Pick Curriculum???

Welcome to HOD! It sounds like in your case, combining your older children would not be in their best interest since they are far apart skill wise. If you feel like you really want to combine at least a few of the children, you may be able to combine the younger ones. The way you place children prop...

Re: Week-In-Review Feb. 2-6, 2015

DD1 is in unit 14 of Res. to Ref. This week we learned about John Wycliff and John Hus. It was neat to find out that while both called for a reform on the church, they didn't always agree on the changes that needed to be made. DD1 is my artist, so she was happy to see her finished drawing of the kni...

Re: List benefits of using HOD in High School

He leaves out lots of details in oral narrations and due to his dysgraphia his answers in bible are only 2-3 words. Sometimes I have the thought that it would be so much easier just to put some text books in front of him with fill in the blank answers and let him go. I am in need of some encouragem...

Re: Placement Question for 5 yr old boy

I'm not exactly sure what your plans are. It sounds as though you want to start using LHFHG now so that you can start Beyond in August. I would recommend starting LHFHG whenever you feel that both of you are ready. Then take it at a pace you are comfortable with. There would be no need to rush throu...

Re: OT: Dyslexia and NOT using OG method

I have 2 that are dyslexic. With my oldest, we worked through one of the HOD reading programs and then instead of using the spelling lists supplied in the guides, we used AAS for a few levels. It was just enough to get her over that hump and understand how to better read and spell. My DD is now 11 a...

Thanks!I may have to find some money in our budget somewhere.
