Re: Have to ask....why wait to start LHFHG till 1st gr?

The main reason I started LHFHG in grade 1 was due to my child's placement on the placement chart. I don't think that the activites are too hard for a 5 year old. The main thing would be if your child is able to listen to you read several pages at a time with no pictures to look at. The thornton bur...

Re: HOD vs. MFW? Why did you choose HOD?

I have never used MFW so I can only say why I chose HOD. When I was choosing what curriculum to use for my daughter's grade 1, I was looking at both MFW and HOD. I chose HOD (LHFHG) because I liked the flexibility of being able to either use the recommended programs for math and phonics, or using my...

Re: Math Suggestions - Age6/Grade 1

We have been using Rod and Staff grade 1 math for my six year old daughter. It is more of a mastery based program. She doesn't really enjoy doing the workbooks, but I think that is because she is such a creative kid and math seems so.... practical. But she is really understanding it well. There is l...

Re: How do you reward/motivate dc?

I find that each of my kids can be motivated differently. My oldest daughter (who is in LHFHG for grade 1 - 6 years old) is highly motivated by tangible rewards. For a while we were having issues with bad attitudes about math. The material wasn't too hard for her, she just didn't find it interesting...

Speeding up LHFHG to finish before baby comes

Hi there, I am looking for advice on whether I should try to finish up LHFHG before my baby is born May 2, or if I should plan to finish after baby is born. Right now we are on unit 16, which means unit 34 would land 2 weeks after my due date. And we have a wedding in the family at the end of May. I...

Re: We are loving LHFHG!!!

It was fairly easy to pick LHFHG for our situation. We hadn't done any phonics or math instrution yet, or worked on any printing, so my daughter fit very well into this guide based on the placement chart. Also, she is young for grade 1 - she just turned 6 at the end of September. We are doing Grade ...

We are loving LHFHG!!!

Just wanted to share my enjoyment of LHFHG!!! We are using it for Grade 1! I love how straightforward and simple it is to use - I can just open up the teacher's manual in the morning and glance over it quickly and away we go! My girls love the Thornton Burgess stories, and the activities for verse m...

Re: Getting Started

I have the same question about how to make this curriculum work for Canadians!!! We are starting this year with LHFHG so the American history is not too heavy yet, and it will be a while before we have to cross that bridge. My husband is American and we may move to the US before we get to the "Bigge...
