Does HOD include phonics "rules" for spelling and reading?

Hi there! We are currently using Beyond for Grade 2. We are a little over half way through Reading Made Easy (going very well), and using List 1 of spelling words. So far (maybe I am missing it somewhere) I have found no discussion on what is a vowel, what is a consonant, or any spelling / phonics "...

Re: Taking books overseas

I would agree that it might be best to only buy the books for the next two years (or use Kindle) and try other options to obtain the other books once you need them. It it becoming more and more common for people to visit missionaries that are on the field (my sister in Asia got several visitors in h...

Re: LHFHG Burgess Books Substitution?

I think it will be difficult for you to find children's literature that is free of some characters who make poor choices. And has to do with the fact that we are all sinners. There are a few books I can think of where the characters don't have character flaws, but not many. Even the Little House on ...

Re: Hands on projects question

One of the reasons I picked HOD is that I knew my kids would love projects and hands on activities, but I don't really enjoy them and am terrible at coming up with them on my own. I was glad that there was hands on stuff but it wasn't super complicated and it was all planned out for me. Last year I ...

Ideas for my 3yo + how to coordinate guides

Hi there! I am looking for ideas on how to schedule my mornings this fall. I have a 7 year old who will be in Beyond, and a 5 year old who I am doing Little Hands to heaven with (adding some phonics and printing for her). I also have a 3 year old. I was wondering how other moms make it work - especi...

Re: Covers came off guides

I have only used LHFHG - and taken good care of it - and my cover started coming off halfway through the school year. I am considering having it spiral-bound rather than glueing it together. I have heard that office supply stores like Staples does this for a reasonable price.

Re: Science in Beyond

I haven't taught Beyond yet, but from what I've seen the format is very similar to LHFHG, where science lessons happen twice a week and correlate with the history lesson. My daughter will be in Beyond this fall, and while I see the value of tying the science to the history lesson, it felt a little t...

Re: Beyond, and "Indians" (First Nations / Native Peoples)

I think what it comes down to for me, is, "What world-view are these resources teaching?" Since I have just skimmed the curriculum after recieving it a few weeks ago, I recieved an initial impression, but since I haven't read every thing in depth yet or taught it, I can't say what my final opinion i...

Re: Beyond, and "Indians" (First Nations / Native Peoples)

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and input! It helps me to just think through how to approach this for the coming year. Definitely some discussions are in order, both about culture and how it varies from place to place, and also how language is something that can change over time. Thanks too for th...

Re: Beyond, and "Indians" (First Nations / Native Peoples)

It is interesting how things can change through the years isn't it? But yes, in Canada, only a Native person could use the word "Indian" (usually while joking with their friends), and not be seen as racist / ignorant. Another similar one, is that many people say, "Eskimo" when that people group pref...

Beyond, and "Indians" (First Nations / Native Peoples)

Hi there, We've had a great year so far with LHFHG and are looking forward to Beyond for the fall. One concern I have is with the wording in the History readers....... In Canada, is is pretty much seen as a swear word or a racial slur to call a First Nations / Native person an Indian. I have a hard ...

Re: Need Help Deciding Between Little Hearts or Beyond

If it were me, I would put her in Beyond. It sounds like skill-wise she would be ready for it, and that your main concern is attitude / motivation. Little Hearts is probably a Grade 1 or K when it comes to math so if your daughter is already adding and subtracting to 20 she would find it too simple....

Re: Learning Styles and Narration

She has the most trouble with the History stories for children questions...... She does alot better with the Burgess Animal stories, but often does not give a very thorough response. Sometimes I ask more questions to encourage her to give more detail. Maybe she needs more modeling / instruction on w...

Learning Styles and Narration

Just wondering how learning styles can affect a kid's ability to narrate, after listening to a passage that is read out loud to them...... If a child is not an auditory learner, can this complicate their ability to answer questions and respond to questions after being read aloud to???? My daughter i...

Re: Teaching LHTH and LHFHG

I just thought I would post what we did, since our situation is very similar to yours. This fall when we started, my oldest had just turned 6 and my second was 4. I combined them into LHFHG. My 6 year old did grade 1 math, started on phonics and did a the reason for handwriting K book. Both girls li...
