Re: 2 Q's: testing and calculators

I'm not sure of Carrie's recommendation, but when I taught mathematics, the students were allowed to use calculators when they started Algebra. My son is currently working through Foerster Algebra 1 and, so far, I haven't allowed him to use a calculator, as it hasn't yet seemed necessary. If he gets...

Re: Grading Foerster's Algebra

There are many ways you could do this. For sake of simplicity, I don't grade the homework assignments, but I do make sure my son completes and corrects all of them. For his final grade, I just take the average of his test scores.

Re: Help with English 3

No, the Preparing guide is not necessary. Just do one lesson a day out of the English book and you'll be just fine. (If you look at the sample week of Preparing, you'll see that the first day just says, "Beginning Wisely: Lesson 2" and the second day, "Beginning Wisely: Lesson 3," etc.)

Re: My son has decided to go back to school

We're not at the high school level, yet, so I hope others will guide you in that direction, but I thought I'd share that R&S Math is excellent, but is not at the 10th grade level. The 8th grade book, their final one, is at a pre-algebra level and solidly 8th grade. (I used to teach high school level...

Re: Sneak Peek #6: New US2 History Guide

Looks fantastic!!! I love that you have thought outside the box and spent so much time reviewing and finding such incredible resources. Did you mean to say, "Studying these areas of science has the benefit of providing students with two differing areas of study from the sciences that have NOT alrea...

Re: Beyond storytime books

In Beyond (and Bigger), the storytime books are specifically scheduled. Instead, Carrie lets you pick a book for each genre. There are the three that are in the HOD packages (classic, boy and girl) and normally 1-2 other suggestions in the appendix. You pick on book per genre, and then divide the b...

Re: Foersters algegra

A few months ago, I spent days and days trying to find a sample. Other than the table of contents and the first page of text found here: http://www.rainbowresource.com/viewpict.php?pid=033416, I don't think there are any samples online. It's a shame, as it would definitely help people in their decis...

Re: Are we behind, is this enough?

We used R&S English 2 when we did Beyond and it worked very well for us. If you think your son is ready for it, you can easily start right now. For math, I would agree with the other poster about giving your son the placement test for Singapore and make your decision based on that. A solid foundatio...

Foerster's Algebra

I just spent an hour looking for online samples of Foerster's Algebra 1, as I'm considering ordering the text for my son, but had no success. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how review is built into the Foerster's text. Do the daily assignments contain a review section which covers material ...

I'm not Mumkins, but I just had to share ...

Wow, Julie, you are amazing!!!

My son is only in 7th, but I'm going to cut and paste your post in my "great HOD posts" file for future reference, so I can read it again when he nears high school. Thank you for sharing your heart! :D
