Re: Placement Help
You could definitely do that with Bigger, and add in the extensions if you need to. We used it last year for 4th grade and it was perfect! It really helped my son's writing and we didn't even add in the extensions, it was very hearty for him. He also reads above his level. Another option is to pull ...

Re: Desks in bedrooms?
My sons, 11 and 8, have always done school at a little table together. Last year my husband made two built in desks in our school room that are separated by book shelves. They are still in the same room, but a few feet apart so that they can't bother each other. It was becoming a huge problem with h...

Re: MFW vs. HOD
Just wanted to add that I started out with MFW for Kindy and 1st with my oldest, then switched to HOD because I was searching for a Charlotte Mason/Amleside curriculum. I loved MFW K, which I think is an awesome supplement in a transition year between LHTH & LHFHG. I did that with my youngest. But a...

Re: Timeline on wall - adding to it year after year
In each guide, the students make their own timeline. In Beyond and Bigger I think they draw a picture and put names & date. We used cardstock paper for this, with the paper divided up in 50 year increments (instructions in the guides) and make a small book out of it. In Preparing, they make their ow...

Re: 4-day week?
The younger guides are 5 days a week (Little hearts, Beyond & Bigger) until you reach the Preparing guide, then it goes down to 4 days!

Combining Help
My 10 yo is just finishing up Bigger, and my 8 yo finished Little Hearts. I would love to combine my sons in Preparing next! Looking at the placement chart, the only thing holding me back from putting my 8 yo in Preparing is he has not done cursive. He is just finishing his manuscript book. He can d...

Re: Placement/Suggestions?
I understand about the budget...I would personally do Little Hearts. It would be perfect for your 5 yo, and in the back of the guide there are book suggestions for each unit to further your study for your older student. The Thornton Burgess books are excellent to add on to and do lap books on each a...

Re: About to give up, and send to PS
I just wanted to encourage you. I believe that most homeschooling mamas go through times of feeling as you are now. Homeschooling is a big calling. Let me rephrase that: it is a big ministry! And when I personally remember to look at it as my ministry, it truly changes my perspective. Concerning you...

Re: Nature Study
We have made it up to Bigger so far, and as far as nature study being laid out for the children, I haven't run across that yet. I can't speak for the older guides, as I have no idea! Bigger does have the children working through the One Small Square books, drawing and learning about woods, seashore ...

Re: staying on one subject for too long
We are currently doing Bigger right now and it's been awesome! Learning about a new historical figure almost every week! Some of them I would've liked to have lingered on a bit longer, but I just stuck with the program as is. The John Audubon book for science was wonderful! And that one we read for ...

Re: Placement Help
What state are you in? I agree. looking through the guides is the biggest blessing. Have you printed out the week samples online? That's usually very helpful for me. I'm still a HOD newbie, but I always feel the more input you can get is helpful. My 7 yo is just about to finish Little Hearts for his...

Re: What to do between Little Hands and Little Hearts
I actually ran into the same problem! I am just finishing up Little Hearts and my son is 7, so we took a long break doing other things. Here's what we did as it may be helpful: we read lots of books! We began slowly working through Rod and Staff workbooks when he turned 4-5. Then we tried out Five I...

Re: Moving up help
Thank you ladies! That is exactly what I needed to hear! I will move oldest up now to Preparing, I was concerned about not finishing Bigger with him, but he's just ready for more. It's nice to have permission, in a sense, to not finish a guide. I like to finish things, so that's a relief to have the...

Moving up help
HI! I have loved this year so far! My 10 yo is in Bigger and 7 yo is in Little Hearts. But after Christmas every year they both have a learning curve! I really toyed with beginning them both in Preparing and Beyond, but due to skill levels, chose to hang back. Now that we've progressed through Bigge...

Re: "Boyhood and Beyond" Advise
Oh that's such a relief! I thought that 11 seemed young, as most of the boys I remember not changing until 13-14 going into freshman year. Thank you! That's very helpful about knowing the content of the books as well.
