Re: Schedule for year-round schooling

We just basically do school when we do it and don't when we don't. It typically works out that we get a guide done in roughly a year. Unless the child needs to slow down as was the case for my now 9 year old. Sometimes we take time off from the entire guide and just do math, English, and reading so ...

Re: Placement after getting too far ahead

If you looked at the placement chart fresh for her, without thinking about anything you have already done, where does she place? As for the younger, I'd say there would be absolutely nothing wrong with doing LHFHG over again.

End of school year update...

Time for my yearly posting of how awesome HOD is :D Jayden and Grace were in a charter school this past year. They have been so well trained by HOD that their school year this year was great for them. They both made A honor roll! Juli did Preparing this past year. She was 5th grade. She tested at an...

Re: Ideas for Completing Guides?

Does it help you feel any better to know that my 5th grade / 11yo is finishing up Preparing and my almost 9yo 3rd grader is in the middle of Beyond? If the guide is working for them and they are progressing then they are not behind. Now that does make ME feel better :) tho it was intended for the O...

I agree, especially if that's the only part he balks at. I'd put it away a couple of weeks and come back to it fresh after that.

Re: MtMM Indvidual State Study - which state to pick

I would say that if the state you are in doesn't regulate that for you, then let them pick.

NC says they have to have NC history in order to graduate. So we would have had no choice.... I had my kids take NC history through a coop type thing though.

Bragging on Evie (8.5) a little

Evie is my fourth child. She has always struggled with some things. She was in speech therapy until our therapist moved away. They said that she had some processing issues, but we never found out what they were due to the therapist moving and evidently them losing the notes on Evie. But thank...

Just for fun, and no help whatsoever with the original question, when I was in high school I took biology, advanced biology, chemistry, and AP biology  :P

Re: Phonics

If he doesn't like the phonics program right now then I'd put it away a couple of months. If he likes the program just fine but not actually reading, then I wouldn't push that at all right now. A little background about my family.... I started phonics with my oldest when she was about 6. It was just...

Re: Phonics recommendation?

The other thing you can do is separate school and reading. What I mean is that you can still do the ERs even though he's well above that level of reading because it teaches them how to think through the book, not just comprehension. That can be part of school. Then once you are done with school for ...

Re: Homeschool Names

Took me a while too... We are Cornerstone Academy. First, Jesus is the Chief Cornerstone. But also, because the cornerstone is what the entire building is built from. When we started homeschooling, we didn't know how long it would be. I didn't feel called to homeschool. It was for two reasons: 1)I d...

Re: Road Trip

Just to update, we had a great time! We went through DC, to Baltimore, up to Philedelphia (and Valley Forge), over to Atlantic City, through (literally just drove through) Trenton on the way to a cousins house for lunch, up to NYC (stayed in Brooklyn), up through Connecticut and RI to Boston, then u...

Re: Road Trip

We will take a weekend trip sometime to do Jamestown/Williamsburg/Yorktown. We are only a few hours away from there. But we don't want to do that when it is so hot because we have a couple of kids who really struggle with heat. That'll be a fall/spring activity. We've done it once with the older thr...

Road Trip

We are taking a road trip next week (Saturday evening through the week until the next Sunday) up the east coast (we are in NC). What are some places that would be interesting/important to hit that they learn about in HOD... mainly the younger guides. Evie is doing Beyond now, so I thought mainly thi...
