Re: Science in RTR.....

Deltagal/Florence, You are as wise as Julie and Carrie, LOL. As I re-read the placement chart now, I would say he *just* fits into RTR. Reading is no issue - he can read very challenging books, no problem. Writing - 8-12 sentence narrations are stretching him a little. He is ready to begin basic out...

Re: Science in RTR.....

Patty, Yes, (although I'm Lynn, not Florence :) ). But it was ~3 years ago that we used the astronomy book, so I thought it would seem "new" again - Maybe he made plenty of connections the first time, LOL. Thanks for pointing out the possibility of substituting if we've already used the book. I'll s...

Re: Science in RTR.....

Hi Lyn, Could you share a bit more? Is it the work, the experiments, the reading, the writing, the topic? At what point in his day does he do Science? Does he do any of it? Or does he simply get to the box and balk? If so, does he do his other boxes well and without complaining? We could offer inpu...

Science in RTR.....

My ds is complaining a bit about the science in RTR.... so this is as much as prayer request for discernment on my part (and change of heart on his) as much as anything. He generally has a good attitude and does the rest of his work happily (if not terribly enthusiastically). History has always been...

Half Pace is my friend!

We went half pace for the first unit and saw how great everything was and decided to go full pace - which we did for the next two units. Whew! At the end of that my house was a wreck and the 2nd Friday saw us working until 3 or 4:00 (late start, off schedule, winging it.... didn't work well, LOL). S...

Re: What to do now?

Sorry I misunderstood as well! That's what I get for applying my situation too much to yours!

Hopefully some others will have some better ideas for you. The wisdom here from Julie and Carrie and others has amazed me as I worked through my own placement concers!

Re: What to do now?

My .02.... If I read correctly... your 7yo isn't ready for Bigger but has already done Beyond. Your 5 yo is ready for LHFHG, but your 3.5 yo isn't and won't be anytime this school year. I would consider combining your 5yo and 7yo in LHFHG now, beefing up the LA for your 7yo (i.e. did she do list 1 s...

Re: Need a little advice...

Hi Rebecca, Take what I say with a grain of salt because it is mostly speculation. :D I have used Spell to Write and REad a few years back with my oldest and since then I have used components of it when have taught each child to read. BUT, I'm thinking about what you said about vowel teams and I'm t...

Re: If you have a dc who is a bit stretched by placement...

Julie, Thank you so much for your response and your question. In trying to answer your question, I'm realizing I may just need to help him ease into the independence more. I think his difficulty is in reading the instructions (instead of me telling him what to do) and in managing his time better. I ...

Re: Best tips for peace, sanity, or really helpful stuff!

When you plan it is "working" It is "good" and you are "successful". When you then do and it is not God directed other thoughts, other voices can take His place and then you can feel discontent. But do you know what I figured out. It is far more "empowering" to say " Lord I am turning it all over t...

It seems this is the right time of year to revive this older thread. So much wisdom here! I was so blessed reading it and thought others would be as well!

If you have a dc who is a bit stretched by placement...

It's quite possible he would have been better placed in CTC.... or even Preparing with extensions.... but I put him in RTR because I honestly think he CAN handle the work and, I confess, because we did ancients last year and would like to do Middle Ages this year. But, he's possibly not ready for th...

Re: Scheduling difficulties...help?

Hi Sue, I say try it. The only problem I would have if I moved LHFHG to the afternoon would be would I get good enough focus from my 5 and 7 yo? Also, my 7yo REALLY struggles with math, and I've found it's best for BOTH of us to do that first thing!! I do understand about how nice it would be...

Re: Read most of Boyhood and Beyond last year....

Thanks Carrie. I think you're right. I think the additional scriptures and discussions will be fruitful. When we did that yesterday I felt a little unsure about coming up with a plan for appreciating God's attributes through His creation (I'm not very good at thinking on my feet) .... and then I tho...

Re: When a child is used to reading through books quickly....

Tansy, Thanks for the advice and for laughing with me. I'm sorry to say we did not go out for ice cream tonight, LOL. And I made him do about half of his school work - I think that was even a little surprising to him. I decided to allow the other half to be done tomorrow because I had already planne...
