Grandpa’s Box

Did your children immediately enjoy the book? We are only on chapter 4 and so far they tolerate it, but don’t like or love it. They are a bit older (almost 10) compared to others who use the guide. Just wondering if it gets better?

LHTH questions

Hello! I have a little one who is turning 4 in September. I have LHTH and have tried using the guide. I find a lot of it rather preachy and forced (at least when I look at it). If I cut out those parts there’s not much left? If you use it and love it can you explain how you do it and how your child ...

Re: Preparing specifics/ special needs

Thank you so much for the information!!! I do think he can go through at least half a book of rod and staff a year. He may get through more than I foresee now- but the pacing, constant review, and clear written instructions is gold. I’ve thought about doing separate guides! We will see. She loves th...

HOD & Twaddle

I really appreciate the book selections in HOD. I was looking for literature for my 6 yr old and realized most of the books in the library were twaddle. I don’t mind a little bit… I am back to ordering HOD’s books for my children.. luckily most are available through inter library loan, but I’ll be b...

Re: Preparing specifics/ special needs

Did any of your children have special needs? Was evens/odds enough for retention? My DS needs a ton of repetition and doesn’t comprehend things orally (auditory processing difficulties). He is doing Rod and Staff 3 this year (though he’s technically a 5th grader). I feel the amount of work in 3 is j...

Re: Preparing specifics/ special needs

I am having him do most of the writing in rod and staff- otherwise he won’t retain it. That’s helpful about the science. I also feel like doing some of the other writing will be good for him- stretching him a bit- but science will be best orally (he loves science so killing it with writing would be ...

Preparing specifics/ special needs

I have twins doing preparing. One is above that level - could easily do CTC. However she did a lot last year and I feel she could use an easier year and work on other things. Her twin has always been delayed with everything. I’ve accommodated him. With bigger we didn’t do much of the writing exercis...

Re: Preparing supplies (notebooks)

No I don’t have the preparing notebook pages- we are just going to do what the guide says. I ended up buying a small sketchbook for history and one for science. I’m not sure how to print the science pages, but I’m thinking they can write right in the sketchbooks however they wish to- maybe comic boo...

Re: Preparing supplies (notebooks)

Thank you that’s helpful. I love composition notebooks so that makes sense they keep them for longer than a year with other guides!! I didn’t find sketchbooks on my shopping spree so maybe I’ll try binders for history/science

Preparing supplies (notebooks)

I have an older guide.
It’s says I’ll need:
Vocab notebook
English notebook
Common place notebook
Dictation notebook
Sketchbook for history
Sketchbook for science.

I’m fine with buying these- but are they all needed? Seems like they wouldn’t go through the whole thing?

Re: 7 YO Super Interested in Periodic Table of Elements

Our library has a rocks and mineral set. I also have this book Fun with Mixing and Chemistry https://www.amazon.com/Fun-Mixing-Chemistry-Heidi-Gold-Dworkin/dp/0071348255 Bought used.. it’s not a curriculum- just a fun book with experiments for young children (and easy to understand pictures and expl...

Re: Combine 4th and 7th grader in Preparing?

Math, reading and writing is all they absolutely need to be prepared for highschool- in my opinion. I wouldn’t worry about a lighter content year. He’ll get the full history and science courses all over again in highschool. If he’s not doing well with the basics then less content is better so he can...

Re: Math for 5th grader

I forgot She did do Singapore briefly before I switched everyone to math mammoth. She did ok with it, but it was only 2a. I’m hesistant to switch back because most of it is her attitude. I’m not sure if I should push through this or make a switch 🤔. Maybe I’ll try addressing her behavior through inc...

What do you use to teach it? Do you use home instructors guide?
