Re: Alternative to Rod&Staff Language Arts - Bigger
I have found the spiral approach of Christian Light has worked much better for learning grammar for both of my boys. The constant review and work sheet learning worked better for retention for them. One of them did R&S 2,3,4,and 5 before Christian Light; the other did R&S 2,3,4, and 6. I ended up re...

Re: Reading Comprehension
Welcome to Homeschooling! Bigger or Preparing would work for 4th grade. Have you looked at the placement chart on the HOD web-site? It could help you decide between the two. You can also ask questions here, or call Heart of Dakota, to help with placement. Carrie, the author, and Julie, the editor, b...

Re: WH Ordering Question / English Placement ?
Thank you very much, Julie, for your reply! :D Your information was extremely helpful, and it gave me a clearer picture of how the WH & US History I guides work. I’m glad to know WH solo is the best plan! Thank you for your encouragement. I’m really looking forward to using Heart of Dakota again! :D...

WH Ordering Question / English Placement ?
Hi! :D I have WH in my Cart, and I have some questions about the order. Last spring, the lovely ladies on this board and Carrie and Julie helped place my son into WH for this fall. I have some questions though about the English credit. He did a few very informal essays for his literature study with ...

Re: Placement Chart Questions?
Thanks so much for sharing a bit more about your kiddos! Based on what you've shared, I think your 14 year old could probably handle MTMM, however if you desired to keep your 13 and 14 year old together (and they work well together), you could do Revival to Revolution with both of them instead. :D ...

Re: Placement Chart Questions?
Hello! We are glad to have you here! :D The ladies are doing a terrific job of helping you talk through placement options. I really echo what they are saying. :D I agree that your 13 year old seems to fit well in Revival to Revolution. :D This takes into account what you've shared about writing and...

Re: Placement Chart Questions?
That is very helpful! Thanks for writing it all out for us! My first two cents are that when uncertain between two guides, go with the lower one. Especially with multiple students to teach! And the fact that in their writing you assess them in a lower guide would support that, as well, since there ...

Re: Guide Placement?
Looking at the placement charts, which guide (or which guides) do you see them as closest to placing in, if you consider each one independently of the others? Blessings, Thank you for your post Rice, and for your question. I will do my best to answer. I am going to go down the placement chart I hav...

Placement Chart Questions?
My children are now 16, 14, 13, and 11. They were 12, 10, 8, and 6 the last time we were using HOD. I am considering HOD again for next fall; I think my two primary reasons are the following: I have some concerns that I am not assigning enough for college preparation, and I am finding it increasingl...

Re: Discovering Design with Chemistry-Question on Experiment
You are correct that rubbing alcohol won’t work. The denatured alcohol for experiment 2, chapter 3 of the book can be found next to the paint in a hardware store. It is used for paint thinner, and it does say denatured alcohol on the can. You will need it for more experiments during the year so it i...

Re: 9th Grade Physical Science?
The integrated Physics / Chemistry in 9th with WG I believe would cover your physical science credit. What they are wanting is typical. Two basic science sequences are often used: Biology Chemistry Physics AP science Or: Physical Science - I believe WG Integrated Physics covers this credit. Biology ...

Re: Placing DS16 - World History w/ writing difficulties
* Does IPC followed by Chemistry seem like Chemistry overkill?? I am concerned. I’d like him to have the Physical Science but it sounds like it isn’t enough and that IPC is stronger. I don’t think it would be overkill to have Chemistry follow IPC. IPC introduces some of the base knowledge needed fo...

Re: Need Guidance for a Typical R&S 6 Day
Thank you both for explaining how you use R&S. Christianmom, thank you for your thoughts on possibly needing R&S 7 or 8. I have had the same feeling, and have been trying to decide what to do there because it would help to be able to use the high school guides as written. In comparing R&S 6 and CLE...

Re: Placing DS16 - World History w/ writing difficulties
I’ve been looking at the placement chart with my own 15 year old in mind. I thought this quote I copied from the HOD web-site by the placement chart may help you: Each of the rows is placed in order of importance for correct placement, so consider the first row (AGE) to be more important than the se...
