Re: Should I Separate Kids?

Thank you so much for all the responses! I decided to take December off of HOD and do a unit study on the Civil War. We did a unit study on the Revolution last summer that everyone really enjoyed. I'm going to keep thinking their placement while we take this break. What I'm really leaning towards ri...

Re: Should I Separate Kids?

I appreciate all the feedback! I see what you're saying Julie. I *know* keeping older boy in Preparing at full speed and putting younger boy in Bigger would be most skill appropriate for each boy. I also do want them to be separated eventually. I just can't see how *I* can do both of those guides at...

Re: Should I Separate Kids?

That is actually just what I've been thinking the last couple days! You just confirmed it! I'm going to give that a trial for a few weeks and see how it goes. It probably won't be that hard to just slow them both down, but at the same time expect more from my older son so that he's still bein...

Re: Should I Separate Kids?

Thank you for all the responses so far! I feel confident older boy is well placed in Preparing. He is challenged, but not overwhelmed. Lessons are taking the suggested time. He does work well independently. I've got him reading the Storytime box on his own and then we discuss. He is able to do all i...

Re: Should I Separate Kids?

Hi Daneal, We never did Bigger. I started Bigger with these two boys together last year and found it way too easy for the older boy. I really wanted them together for everything possible last year, so we ended up having an eclectic year. I still have most the books for Bigger, but I don't have teach...

Re: Should I Separate Kids?

I've thought about that, but to have them at different places in the guide would be pretty much the same as running two separate guides. With this particular guide being so teacher intensive, that makes me a little nervous. Maybe someone who has had two children at separate places in the same guide ...

Should I Separate Kids?

Hello! I'm wondering if some of you might could give some input on placement. My youngest two children are going through PHFHG together. They are 3rd and 5th grade. We are in unit 10, so we've had plenty of time to get comfortable with it. I'm feeling that my 3rd grader would gain much more from the...

Re: OT: Celebrating the teen years

When my girls turned 13 I wrote them each a letter telling about their birth day, how much they are loved & filled the letter with encouragement to make good decisions and to have a vision for their life. I also asked various women in their lives to write them a letter. I then took all these letters...

Re: 4-Day schedule for Bigger

Thank you for the responses!! We started Bigger this week, going 1/2 speed for Unit 1. I am so excited about using HOD with my guys this year. They are the youngest of my five and I am savoring spending this time with them. They grow sooooo fast!!

Re: 4-Day schedule for Bigger

Thank you for the responses!! I am using this with 8 & 9 year old boys (grades 2 & 4). I'm not worried about it overloading them. They can definitely handle a couple extra activities each day. My husband's day off is on Tuesdays. We usually take that day off school so the boys can spend time with da...

4-Day schedule for Bigger

Hello! I have been searching the boards for a 4-day schedule for Bigger and I can't find one posted anywhere. I saw a suggestion to look at the HOD Facebook group to get one, but I don't have Facebook. Can anyone help?

Thanks :D

Re: Covers came off guides

I had mine spiral bound at Office Depot. Costs about $4. I LOVE it! Makes it much easier to use in my opinion. You could also laminate the covers before binding to add extra durability. I will do this with all future guides. :D

Re: Cost

That is a good question. I am using Preparing Hearts and Beyond Little Hearts this year. Most of these books I already had or was able to buy used off eBay and Amazon. I wanted my 8th grader to use Missions to Modern Marvels this year, but just plain could not afford it. I am determined to find a wa...

Re: Becoming a single mom

Being a single homeschooling mom is a topic that is close to my heart. Five years ago my husband left for work one morning as usual, and never returned. Overnight, with no warning at all, I became a single mom to five children ages one to eleven. I had no education or work experience to speak of. I ...
