Re: Placement Chart Questions?

That is very helpful! Thanks for writing it all out for us! My first two cents are that when uncertain between two guides, go with the lower one. Especially with multiple students to teach! And the fact that in their writing you assess them in a lower guide would support that, as well, since there i...

Re: A question about LA placement in Bigger Hearts

If your 8yo places best in Beyond, do NOT attempt to combine them in Bigger. You would either: 1) use Beyond and beef things up for your 10yo (which would be easier after this first year - in Bigger and up HOD provides Extensions for older students), if you believe that combining them is best for yo...

Re: Guide Placement?

While knowing what they are are doing is helpful, could you also share your observations of where they place in the guides, based on the placement chart? (https://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php) Many of the things you mention we may or may not be familiar with, but, more importantly, y...

Re: Rev to Rev Science supplies..?

You'll have to contact EE for that info, seeing as it is them that is selling that replacement set, not HOD. (HOD only sells the original set for a first child; the replacement set isn't stocked by them.)

Blessings,

Re: How are you all doing?

Here in Canada, everything is shutting down. Large (and, increasingly, small) meetings, schools, some day cares, theatres, some restaurants, while others have gone to pick-up/take-out only, and more changes daily. As a homeschool family, we will miss regular events like Bible Study, Youth, church, e...

Re: Organizing HOD Things

We have a farm office/homeschool room, but everyone works in the living room or their own bedroom. We use recycling buckets for the books they are currently using, to haul them around, and have Ikea shelves in the office that hold their buckets. Ideally they are to be put back in the office every da...

Re: CTC Extension Books

I believe that's the only Extension book from CTC that has changed, because Cat of Bubastes has now been scheduled in the high school guides. A Cry from Egypt would have directly replaced it, not changing the schedule for any other books, so whatever book you choose to use there can be scheduled ove...

Re: Check-in: What guides are you using?

DS 4th - Bigger halfway (he has learning disabilities) DD 1st - Bigger halfway Carrie Benner, Your 4th grader is not behind in Bigger! While some use it for 2nd, it's true, most use it for 3r or 4th, so with LDs, Bigger should be a perfect fit! (And even Beyond, with LDs isn't unusual. :) ) However...

Re: Dictation

I've always tried to do a sentence at a time, as per CM recommendations, stretching their memory, but as we got into higher levels, that was sometimes too difficult, even for my advanced kiddo, so I sometimes went down to just a phrase or two (especially if needing a second, third or fourth day for ...

Re: Teaching multiple ages moving forward

I don't know if you've looked at the first grade science. There isn't any "more" to it than the K, just different topics covered. Unfortunately, while that may be an option, it eliminates the correlation of the text to the activities Carrie has planned in the guide. (I use the K science for 1st grad...

Re: Teaching multiple ages moving forward

While it may work this year and next to have your LO tag along, the reality is they NEED to be within the suggested age range for the guides. While I've heard of people starting kids off under the age range, I have not heard of that successfully continuing for longer than a year or two (and the stre...

Re: To combine or not to combine? So may littles, so little

I may just need to let go of my desire to always have them start guides and finish guides at the same time. Its hard to let go of that feeling of being behind (even when I know we aren't really). If you're like me, Bethany, you'll find that starting guides at different times of the year is more fre...

Re: To combine or not to combine? So may littles, so little

I agree with Stephanie. It doesn't sound like combining your older two is a good idea, and I especially would NOT put someone you think was pushed to start too early into a guide for which they are below the suggested age range and do not place into skill wise. It is the opposite of what you want to...

Re: Delaying kindergarten- need encouragement

I love doing the K options (excluding science; basically just FMS books and printing) from LHFHG for K, and adding in good read-alouds/picture books, then we do the guide with the 1st grade options (but K science, so it matches the science activities). My boys all start 1st with LHFHG when they are ...
