Re: The Two "n" words - Narration and Notebooking

Thanks for your thoughts, Lynn and Carrie, We did do Beyond last year ..... I feel confident that she is placed correctly according to her skill level - the work is not too hard for her - just uninspiring. She has excellent fine motor skills and printing - her cursive looks like a photocopy of the w...

The Two "n" words - Narration and Notebooking

Hi everyone, we are about 5 weeks into Bigger, and I need some advice. My daughter really dislikes the two N words - narrating and notebooking. She is a creative girl who is also a kinesthetic learner. What can I do? Every single day in Bigger we are either narrating or notebooking or both, and whil...

Re: Alternatives to "Screen Time"

I recently did some research on what the "experts" say about how much screen time kids should have. The most common amount was 1-2 hrs per day. So I set my mental goal for 1 hr per day. They are each allowed to go on the tablet for 1/2 hr per day. Then if they want they can watch a short movie/show ...

Re: How do I "beef up" Little hands for kindergarten?

This year I tried beefing up little hands for my 5 yo Kindergarten student. Looking back, I think it would have been better to start LHFHG and just go half speed. Of course you know your child the best but I found that with my daughter, LHTH was just too simple and geared more for preschool. If it w...

Re: Chapter book suggestions for my 7yo girl

These are for her to read. Right now she is reading the Boxcar children books - it takes her only a day or two to get through one. Earlier she had some chapter books from the library that were similar in length/difficulty. She also read the first book of the Grandma's attic series and enjoyed that o...

Chapter book suggestions for my 7yo girl

My seven year old is crazy about horses and I'm looking for suggestions of good quality horse chapter books for her. Also, what other series of chapter books are highly recommended for girls her age???? We have several of the Boxcar children books, and also the Little House on the prairie series.......

Re: Help!

I would say, don't worry too much about it. I think its great that they completed the math and English, that is the main thing in those younger grades. Honestly I think that the only reason to stress about completing the rest would be to get some practice in things like narrating and notebooking bef...

Re: Placement for 1st, 4th & 7th

I won't try to answer all of your questions, but here are some thoughts. We did reading made Easy this year with my 7 year old who was still not reading yet at the start of the year. I my opinion, you should not start Reading Made Easy until your child already knows the individual sounds for each le...

Re: What do use in place of handwriting in LHFHG

I am assuming you are done a Reason for Handwriting K or the first Italic book. Why not do A reason for Handwritng A - it has 6 weeks of review at the beginning going over all the upper and lowercase letters, and is followed by learning to copy verses - including tracing words before writing them yo...

Re: Strange question

Hi there, my in-laws are really into grinding their own wheat so have given all their children wheat grinders as wedding gifts. :D The one I have is a Nutri-Mill. It works well. However it is very loud compared to others that I think are called either whisper-mill or wonder mill or something like th...

Re: How do I manage different levels with littles?

I agree that I would not jump into Little Hearts yet this year. 5 years old is the very youngest age recommended for that level, and you don't need to rush things. I think that doing LHTH over again will cement what you have learned this year for your 5 yo and help her to be ready for Little Hearts ...

Re: Help!! Trying to finalize my plan

Four guides does seem like a lot, doesn't it!!! I my kids are young enough that I have only run two guides at a time so I don't have any words of wisdom in the running 4 guides area. But I would say that "what I would do" if I were you, is combine the 7 and 9 year old in Beyond, rather than Bigger. ...

Re: Handwriting-Need Help

Have you tried writing the poem, one line at a time, on grade 1 lined paper, right above where he writes? I wonder if you even just started with one line, and it was right above, if he would have an easier time remembering how to form the letters???? Or if he is really having trouble with a lot of l...

Re: Revisit:Afternoons, socialization, and a philosophy of l

For me, I try not to look too much at what "other homeschool families" do, and take on only what works for our family. Every mom has different levels of energy, amounts/ages of kids, help from husband or family members, etc. Rather than looking at what other people do, I evaluate my own energy level...

Re: Breaking for Summer

I am hoping to wrap up school by the end of May. For sure the two I have in LHTH. My daughter who is in Beyond will be about 2 weeks away from completing the whole guide, but we will likely just finish up the year then no matter how much is left. We live in Canada and the summers here are short but ...
