Re: Help with placement for transitioning from 1st grade Public to HOD in fall

If you have LHFHG, I would go ahead and do some of that. I would focus on storytime (plus the skill subjects you are already planning on doing). If time allows, then add in the left side of the guide. Then later in the summer, you should be able to tell if continuing LHFHG is best or if he is ready ...

The language arts is mostly contained in specific boxes. Have you seen the first unit of the guide? It is a PDF you can download and view. It will give you a good idea of how things are organized. What parts of language arts does you 8yo place better in Beyond for? (Math definitely isn't an issue.)

Re: Rev to Rev Science supplies..?

The box has all of the pieces for the expermiments. We bought the set from HOD, and it came with access to the lessons online, all of the pieces for the labs (small electric circuit, balance, rocket, etc), the log book, and the answer key. This is what is included according to the website: https://w...

Re: How are you all doing?

Our family luckily has above average health. Our parents are over 60, but luckily they are healthy and live in rural areas. So hopefully they will be unaffected by this as well. But our daily lives have changed a little. My oldest had a big trip cancelled for this weekend, one that they had spend ov...

Re: Comparing PHFHG and CtC

Most 4th graders do Preparing, so I personally would combine them in Preparing. You can increase the independence as the year goes. I was able to find one of the history books as audio (Child's History of the World), so for the last few units, I had my son do history independently (I started by sitt...

Re: Organizing HOD Things

Good luck! In our old house, the school books where in one of the two main rooms on the main floor of the house. I hated it because if company came over on the spur of the moment, it was always a mess! We now have a dedicated school room. My husband is still working on building bookshelves/cabinets ...

Re: How do you juggle multiple levels? And more Q's from a newbie.

One thing I love about HOD is how it includes independent work for kids starting in Preparing. If you look at the first unit (PDF you can download), you will notice that boxes are labeled I (independent), S (semi independent), and T (teacher led). We start off a guide at half speed, intending the fi...

Re: What are your kids enjoying this year in HOD?

My oldest in Rev2Rev said she loves everything but grammar and Bible study. I think for her, Bible study is a lot of review, so it isn't as interesting for her. I asked my son what he loved about Preparing, since he is only on Unit 1 of CtC. He loved the history projects! My third is a social butter...

Re: Dictation

I have gone to one line at a time. I didn't like doing sentences because my daughter one when to place a period. Reading a line makes her determine where a sentence begins and ends. I tried to do while passages, and she would make small mistakes, like changing a word or two that didn't change the me...

Oldest is almost half way through Rev2Rev.
Second is starting CtC tomorrow.
Third is almost half way through Bigger.
And fourth will start LHTH some time in the next month (when #2 moves to full speed).

They were never something HOD created or provided. Some moms have created files like you said, and many of them can be found on FB, etc.

Re: Need Help with High School Science Path

I wouldn't focus on the honors track if she isn't interested in a career in a science field. I looked up the graduation requirements for Georgia, and this is what a found (from the Department of Education website): Science: Four units of credit in science shall be required of all students, including...

Re: Teaching multiple ages moving forward

My older three are 23 and 20 months apart. My oldest is advanced and possibly gifted. She started LHFHG at 5.5 and had done well doing a guide a year. My next two I tried to combine in LHTH at 2 and 3.5. It didn't work well, as they competed for attention, etc. I ended starting them both in LHFHG at...

Re: To combine or not to combine? So may littles, so little

I don't have as many kids as you, but my older three are close in age like yours. And my middle two I tried combining back in LHTH (and with Awana Cubbies since they were the same level), and it didn't work. They are too competitive, and it was just a battle. They are doing the same Awana book this ...
