Re: How is evolution approached?

HOD teachers a literal 6 day creation. Before MtMM, only a few books even mention millions of years or other references to evolution or the gap theory. Carrie either leaves notes about these in the guide or skips those sections completely (the first few chapters of Child's History of the World are s...

Re: Dictation

First, the lowest level is Level 2. But likely, Level 2 will be VERY easy for him. One thing to try is to do the top one of each column until he starts to regularly miss some. Having to repeat one or two in a level once isn't a big deal. But once he gets to where he is having to repeat regularly is ...

Re: Dithor with a struggling reader

My son is 10 and in CtC. I have recorded the readings for history and science or found them as audio. With that modification, he is having no problems completing CtC. I think he is in Unit 17. The only changes to the guide we have made are math (we use Horizons, and he is in Grade 6), Dithor (discu...

Re: Dithor with a struggling reader

If you don't want to go down to the level 2 books, which would have been my first suggestion. :D My next suggestion is to read the books at half speed. So one day you would read half the assigned pages and do the dithor page and the next day just read the 2nd half of the assigned pages and then hav...

Re: Roll Call: What are your starting/stopping/taking a break plans?

My girls will finish there guides next Tuesday most likely. We will take the rest of the week and at least the next week off. We might take 2.5 weeks off, depending on how things go. I am already planning on doing a popsicle stick bridge challenge with the kids during the break. And there will be ba...

Re: Phonics Instruction

What areas do you think they need more instruction in? Is it that they aren't reading fluently but can sound out words fairly well? Is it that they can read fluently if it is an "easy" word but struggle to sound out harder/longer words? Is it that they struggle accross the board with reading still?

Re: Contemplating HOD Curriculum

First, we have never used the HOD recommended math in the hide. Mark is definitely one subject that is EASY to switch out. The only concern is to not use something that takes too much time. For K-3, it should be 30 minutes or less a day. For upper elementary, it can be a little longer, but it still ...

Re: How are you all doing?

We are filling our days with school. We are doing a unit in 4 days for the older three. The girls should finish their guides by mid May (except grammar- which we are slightly behind in). We will likely take 1-2 weeks off of full school and then start back up. When there isn't much else to do, why no...

Re: Combining 12 and 14 yo

Have you looked at the placement chart and determined where each one places? I would think CtC would probably be low. RtR might be a great place to start. It is fairly straightforward to adjust Rev2Rev and MtMM for high school, but RtR takes more adjustment. You could get some of the books for CtC a...

Re: Help with placement for transitioning from 1st grade Public to HOD in fall

If you have LHFHG, I would go ahead and do some of that. I would focus on storytime (plus the skill subjects you are already planning on doing). If time allows, then add in the left side of the guide. Then later in the summer, you should be able to tell if continuing LHFHG is best or if he is ready ...

The language arts is mostly contained in specific boxes. Have you seen the first unit of the guide? It is a PDF you can download and view. It will give you a good idea of how things are organized. What parts of language arts does you 8yo place better in Beyond for? (Math definitely isn't an issue.)

Re: Rev to Rev Science supplies..?

The box has all of the pieces for the expermiments. We bought the set from HOD, and it came with access to the lessons online, all of the pieces for the labs (small electric circuit, balance, rocket, etc), the log book, and the answer key. This is what is included according to the website: https://w...

Re: How are you all doing?

Our family luckily has above average health. Our parents are over 60, but luckily they are healthy and live in rural areas. So hopefully they will be unaffected by this as well. But our daily lives have changed a little. My oldest had a big trip cancelled for this weekend, one that they had spend ov...
