Re: Dictation: Question and Request

As for keeping the passages for you to read instead of multiple guides, you are allowed to copy from the appendix. I put each level currently used in a report folder. Each kid has their own. The can mark them up as they go. Sometimes they "highlight" things before the first attempt. And then if they...

Re: Combining in Preparing ?

Have you considered combining in Bigger, but having the 10yo do the extensions? I think that would be a better option long term since the 8yo places perfectly in Bigger.

Re: Struggling Learner Getting Further and Further Behind

Siri what daybreaking said. I recorded or found the audio for all of CtC history and science for my son. He was able to do the independent history reading himself, but the reading about history box and science he listened and followed along. He was able to open the audio on an old phone, so he was s...

Re: high school chemistry

You could postpone chemistry to her senior year, if there is another science she is more interested in taking next year.

Re: Understanding HS Credits

Many colleges have no problems accepting homeschool students, regardless of their parents' education level. Some require more information about the classes but many accept just a basic transcript. I would look at some colleges that might be of interest and see what they currently require and what th...

Re: Elements: Ingredients of the Universe

I actually bought the ebook (pdf) version from the author's website to go with the physical copy I bought from HOD. Now I can just print off the pages that are more "workbook-y." The website also has some free printables, mainly for the items in the appendix. The website is ellenjmchentry dot com. T...

Re: Drawn into the Heart of Reading/Storytime

DITHOR is meant to be read by the student, and in CtC, storytime is still meant to be read by the parent (I read storytime through MtMM). One thing I did do for a season was have my oldest read a Beyond or Bigger storytime book aloud. She would then do the DITHOR activities for that book, and my mid...

Re: Placement Issues

Definitely look at the placement chart. Math doesn't factor into placement really, as it is completely independent of everything else until high school (science). Reading, attention span, and ability to work independently are more important. I am thinking Beyond might be where he places. It is a fun...

Re: Placement pre-k/k

She would probably be okay with LHFHG and then Beyond the following year. But, Bigger as Preparing Hearts are the guides that kids start struggling at the youngest age. Reading ability, amount of writing, and independence are the common struggles. My third did LHTH from 4.5-5.5, which would have bee...

Have you looked at the placement chart for each child?

Re: How is evolution approached?

HOD teachers a literal 6 day creation. Before MtMM, only a few books even mention millions of years or other references to evolution or the gap theory. Carrie either leaves notes about these in the guide or skips those sections completely (the first few chapters of Child's History of the World are s...

Re: Dictation

First, the lowest level is Level 2. But likely, Level 2 will be VERY easy for him. One thing to try is to do the top one of each column until he starts to regularly miss some. Having to repeat one or two in a level once isn't a big deal. But once he gets to where he is having to repeat regularly is ...

Re: Dithor with a struggling reader

My son is 10 and in CtC. I have recorded the readings for history and science or found them as audio. With that modification, he is having no problems completing CtC. I think he is in Unit 17. The only changes to the guide we have made are math (we use Horizons, and he is in Grade 6), Dithor (discu...

Re: Dithor with a struggling reader

If you don't want to go down to the level 2 books, which would have been my first suggestion. :D My next suggestion is to read the books at half speed. So one day you would read half the assigned pages and do the dithor page and the next day just read the 2nd half of the assigned pages and then hav...
