Re: Math facts and Singapore

Not a problem! Before kids, I used to teach Math for Elementary School Teachers at our local community college. So, math is the one area I am comfortable with! The rest I was so unsure of how to teach/what to expect/etc. Luckily HOD seems to be perfect for us! I didn't want memorization but I also d...

Re: Catholics using HOD?

I a not Catholic, but i know there are others that are. Here is one post that might help: http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9288 In the first guide (LHTH), you probably won't have to change a thing. Although there is BIble in it, it is more the stories that most kids learn. In ...

Re: Beyond for a 5.5 year old

If you didn't want to go to Beyond, then could you start back at the beginning for LHFHG for the left side? For the storytime, you could read other Burgess books (some you can get the kindle edition free I think). I bet at 5.5, he won't remember doing the activities OR won't mind doing them again. Y...

Re: Doing two studies: CTC and Bigger

Have you searched the "Share Your Schedules" for CTC Bigger? I think there are at least a few there. Julie also has some with like R2R and Bigger or CTC with Beyond. These probably would be worth looking at too.

Re: Which guide for 6 year old currently in first grade at p

If you haven't ordered - here is an idea: Buy the LHFHG economy package too. Then you can actually look at everything and decide which you want to start with. My daughter is 5.5 but in 1st grade (completed Horizons Phonics and Math K last year with no problems). We are using the left side of LHFHG p...

Re: Which guide for 6 year old currently in first grade at p

So, you have the choice of Beyond or LHFHG first. One of the big differences is the length of the readings in these. Have you done any chapter books with your 6yo? If you haven't (or only done ones with lots of pictures), LHFHG might be a better fit. But, if you have done a lot of chapter books alre...

Lots of moms do! I think it is only about $5 at office supply stores too. But,t he bindings on the books (as is) are the fancier ones that won't break easily as well. So, it is more for convenience than for saving the binding I think.

Re: Math facts and Singapore

Memorization isn't super important until 2nd or 3rd grade normally. I don't think Singapore pushes memorization at all, but I think some families add in a little "fun" practice - computer games, flash cards, etc. We are using Horizons, which is normally labeled "advanced." And even in that one, memo...

Re: 1st time HOD user and having trouble with placement.

We are only on Unit 2 Day 2 of LHFHG, so I am no expert for sure. But, I think the question is whether he is mature enough for the storytime and history. It is only about 3 pages of text for storytime a day, but often there are no pictures. So, this can be challenging (my 5.5 yo still doesn't love i...

Re: 1st time HOD user and having trouble with placement.

First, you can order the Singapore books individually. If you want the teacher's guide, the easiest place to order 1B would be from LHFHG. You can get 2A and 2B under Beyond or Bigger (teacher's guide is in Beyond). As for Bigger or Beyond, how does she fit for language arts between the two guides? ...

Re: Math Sequence

They start out with activities for math in the first few guides - Singapore 1 for LHFHG, Singapore 2 with Beyond, and I think Singapore 3 with Bigger. From there, they just have page numbers, etc for a range of Singapore books. They start the Algebra recommendations in the MtMM guide. MtMM would be ...

Re: Rod and Staff 2 with 3rd grader?

Bigger has Rod and Staff 2 scheduled (Preparing to Build is the 2nd grade grammar book). Preparing has both 3rd and 4th grade options are scheduled. So, I would just keep going with 2 and finish it out. If you get done before the end of the year, pick up the 3rd grade book (Beginning Wisely).

Re: Questions about group study

The first thing I would do is look at the placement chart in the catalog (also online, but I bet reading the catalog is easier for you). Based on what is there, where could your kids place? If the 9th grader would place into the Geography guide, I would be tempted to use that for the older two. The ...

Re: adjusting to History in LHFHG

I didn't think you were going to give up on HOD. I was just giving you the head's up that tomorrow might be easier naturally, so you might not need to make any adjustments. We will also be doing LHTH, but we are waiting another week to start that so I can get the oldest going smoothly first. But, I ...

Re: adjusting to History in LHFHG

We are done with Unit 1 (took 3 days off this week for VBS and will start again tomorrow). The history was fine for my daughter, but the storytime was the problems for us. I asked about that, and the response was that the beginning is often the hardest as it is a change from what they are used to. I...
