Re: math help ... for a child who can't do math!

I am not an expert, but I think Singapore works best for kids who are average to above average in terms of academic ability. I have 2 children who naturally do very well academically and they did okay with Singapore. My child with working memory issues and slow processing speed did disastrously. His...

Re: New Diagnosis: Learning Disability

Thank you for taking the time to chime in Julie. My mother passed in 2013 after a 7 year battle with breast cancer at age 60, just 6 weeks in to our homeschooling journey. Her only sibling, my uncle, passed three years later (almost to the day) - he was like a second father to me. Within six weeks o...

Re: New Diagnosis: Learning Disability

Thank you, Lynn. I appreciate the encouragement. My husband and I have looked at your blog - it is so comforting to see the success your DS has had with accommodations. I think your comment about comparing is so essential. We have struggled for so long to understand how different kids with the same ...

New Diagnosis: Learning Disability

This is our 4th year homeschooling after a brief stint in public school. For the first three years we used HOD "as written" without modification. I had increasing suspicion that one of our kids had a learning disability - there were just struggles I didn't have with the other two children. This scho...

Map Trek

I was gifted Map Trek, the complete collection with the CD. Will this work for the HOD guides it's used in? I see in the description in the catalogue says "customized for HOD".

Thanks

Re: New Homeschooling Mom

I too would agree that erring on the side of using a lower guide is best. I also pulled my kids out of ps (after grades 2 and K). I was amazed at the number of "holes" there were even at such young ages (no grammar, history, science; not great phonics instruction, etc.). There wasn't a love for lear...

Re: New to HoD -- Questions about Placement/Combining

I'm not nearly as experienced with homeschooling or HOD as many of these moms are; however, we have used HOD for our journey thus far and are entering year 3. I have a similar situation. My kids are 21.5 months apart; there are three dc since our last two are twins. What we have done is do the "left...

Re: Preparing Timeline

Thanks so much Lora Beth. The kids have enjoyed timeline in Beyond and Bigger and I will use your suggestion.

Preparing Timeline

Could someone help me find a link that would have some photos of a completed Preparing Timeline? I'm having a hard time visualizing this and am trying to determine where we would put this in our schoolroom so as to have enough space and not be moving it continually. Thanks.

Re: Curriculum Help

I pulled my 3 kids out of public schools and started homeschooling a third grader and two first graders two years ago. My kids were considered "advanced" by school standards (they don't test for gifted programming here until grade 3 though) but what they were receiving in public school wasn't nearly...

Re: Those who don't break for summer

We are a family that chooses to school year round; however, summers are far lighter. The reasons are varied. I work a few days each month, we live on a farm and autumn requires us to take time off for various tasks (firewood, agricultural events, haying, animals birthing, and deer hunting), we have ...

Planning for 2015-2016

I have been playing phone tag with Julie (we have had some health issues and lots of appts) and ultimately I went ahead and made a decision on placement with some help from HOD moms on this forum. DS will enter grade 5 in the next few weeks (we school year round); he will do the science, L/A and mat...

HOD Praises

This is not a bragging mom post, but instead a praise for HOD. My 10 year old DS (who is not an eager student and who has been giving me anxieties about placement for next year, etc.) had his physical today with the pediatrician. He told the doctor that school was going "good" (this is huge for this...

Re: Sending Private Messages

Oh Julie. I hope I didn't make you feel pressured. I truly wasn't sure if my message had gone through. I thank you for all that you do! Wishing you a blessed Holy Week and encouragement as you face this busy season.

Sending Private Messages

I seem to be having trouble sending a private message to Julie...I compose the message and click submit and it goes to the outbox, but not under the sent box. Can someone be kind enough to tell me where I might be making an error?

Thanks.
