Re: Preparing and IEW

I will share that we are using IEW's All Things Fun and Fascinating with my 10 yo dd while doing Preparing this year. It is our first year using IEW and our second year with HOD. The poetry lessons are the only thing we dropped in HOD. We did all the other writing in HOD. My dd is an extremely reluc...

Re: DITHOR BOOK PLACEMENT?

This is my first year with HOD. We are using Bigger and DITHOR. My daughter is 9yo/4th gr. I would say she reads on grade level, but struggles with comprehension. From the posts I looked over, a lot of people suggested using the Level 2/3 Student Book (with books at or below the child's reading leve...

Re: Bigger-spelling or dictation???

My daughter is 9 (4th grade) and we just started Bigger. This is our first year with HOD. We started the dictations from the Bigger manual last year. She never missed one. I was considering moving her up in a higher dictation when we started this year, but then she got one wrong- LOL! She has since ...

Re: book projects

When you use DITHOR, you work through different genres. You read a genre for 15 days, during which time there is a daily activity (narration, vocabulary, character study, etc.). After you finish reading the book, you have 5 days to work on a project that you choose from the DITHOR manual or the Book...

Re: Bigger 4th grader/quest.

This is my first year with HOD and we are using Bigger with my 9 year old/4th grader. I ordered the extensions since I heard it added a lot of interest to the program. My dd is not an advanced reader, so I am just reading the extensions as an "extra" story time book (not requiring any narrations). S...

Re: Can you please help me with one detail?

I am new to HOD. We just finished Week 1 of Bigger. Are you looking for the Extension books or Emerging Readers? For the Extension books you start with A Child's Story of America, Pedro's Journal and Exploring Planet Earth. If you are looking for the Emerging Readers, you would want The Early Reader...

Re: Week 8-27 to 8-31

This was our first week with HOD! We used BHFHG and DITHOR. My dd loves it! :D She enjoys reading/listening to the history, listening to storytime, learning the Bible verses using hand motions and absolutely loves the science experiments! :D Even though our school day is longer than last year, she n...

Re: GREAT First Day!

Thanks Ladies! :D We had an AWESOME week!! DD loves the history, science experiments and the Bible Study. She got a big kick out of running in place & stopping to say the Bible verse. She especially liked using hand motions to help memorize the verse. She did this at camp earlier this month. So bles...

Re: Developing 13 yos comprehension skills

I will be starting my first FULL year of homeschooling on Monday using BHFHG & DITHOR. :D My daughter struggles with comprehension as well (9yo). This board has been an awesome resource! I was wondering, though, are we supposed to write our children's oral narrations like Julie did?

Congrats HOD!!!

Even though I haven't offically started with HOD yet (end of August), I was thrilled to see that HOD was chosen as one of Cathy Duffy's Top 101 Picks in her new book : ) I originally found HOD through Cathy Duffy's website where she had chosen DITHR as a top pick. I know Carrie's & Julie's family wo...
