Re: Sometimes I cringe that my ds has such great retention!

Thanks for the morning laugh :) I'm glad my kids aren't the only ones needing those "socially acceptable" speeches!

Re: Good Christian worldview nature videos?

I like the stuff by Answers in Genesis. They are very strongly young-earth so as long as you are of that persuasion I think you'll like their stuff. It isn't cheap, but I'd say it's a sound investment.

Re: New to HOD and Have At Least One Question!

I just wanted to chime in because I'm totally the same as you! I'm not bound by the clock, but I definitely need order and structure to my day! I have a table I created in Word. I made a box for each subject and I write down the page numbers of the books, a word or two saying the activity, and a spo...

Re: Preparing Storytime

I'm only in Beyond, so I don't have experience with that particular book yet...but...have you considered reading during lunch? I do that with my girls when they're starting to get restless during lessons and I can tell they won't be up for listening or when it's obvious lunchtime will be filled with...

Re: Cursive

Ditto everyone else :) We've started cursive with my 6 year old daughter. She hates printing, but begs to write in cursive. She does a great job and since her printing was quite neat for her age we went ahead. It's going so well! Part of what I'm loving about homeschool is I can move her at her pace...

Re: Our last day in Preparing...sniff, sniff

After reading your post others like it I really have to remind myself to savor and enjoy the guide we are currently in! (Beyond) We started homeschooling mid-year and it took some time to find our groove. I'm a list checker by nature so my tendency has been to "get it done" instead of enjoying the p...

Re: Choosing Curriculum?

The guide will contain instructions for all subjects, but it is up to you what you do! However, I think if you skip the history, you're missing the core of the program. You can certainly choose what you wish, but it is the heart of the program and is very Christ-centered. The nice thing about homesc...

I love the cardstock idea! I was trying to figure out how to do the notebooking without page protectors. That's a great idea!

What sticky tabs do you use?

I started using sticky tabs to keep my place in my guide after reading this wonderful revelation somewhere on this board. BUT... When I used the tabs it stuck to the paper in the guide too much and took off some of the paper! YIKES! I've tried several different ones, but they all did this. Any sugge...

Re: Civil War Question

I highly recommend the fictional book Across Five Aprils. It brings out a lot of aspects of the war that are often forgotten like the fact that even Lincoln's own party often despised him and thought he was a fool. It's more for middle schoolers or upper elementary, but it might be a good read for y...

Re: What does half speed look like?

There are different ways to do this, but the best explanation I received was to plan for 17 units one year and 17 units the second. This made so much sense to me! Another way to do half speed is to alternate pages. Monday- pg 1 of day 1, Tuesday - pg 2 of Day 1, and so forth. I'm planning to do Bigg...

How thankful I am for HOD!

I NEVER intended to homeschool. My husband and I agreed with the idea of keeping our kids home until school age, but after that we just assumed traditional school would be the route we would go. In the area we used to live we realized even before my first daughter was born that homeschooling might h...
