Re: Switching up High School science order to enable combini

Thank you so much, Carrie, for helping me think this through. I know you must be really busy. Actually I realize now my signature is somewhat confusing. It looks like my girls are only 1 guide apart. Actually the older one is in Unit 33 of MTMM while the younger is only in Unit 4 of Rev to Rev, so I...

Thank you, Carrie, for your book choices & recommendations!

I just wanted to thank you for the fabulous books you include in HOD as well as the great choices in the Sample Book ideas. I think my oldest would have loved reading no matter what the curriculum, but the variety in what she reads is due to HOD. Many many times she has gone to the library searching...

Re: Switching up High School science order to enable combini

Thank you Carrie! It is so helpful to get your input in making this kind of decision! I had another thought since writing this post and that is that the Astronomy/Geology still has a lab that may require parent involvement whereas the Biology course looks very hands-off for the parent. I was now thi...

It is spread out over the whole guide, one day per unit (day 4).

Switching up High School science order to enable combining

Hello, with my oldest on the verge of starting high school, I am starting to get nervous about the amount of time it will take to teach high school science. I want to be present to help with labs, but my days are already SO full! I was wondering, since my kids are all about 2 guides apart and my old...

Re: Recommendation on Literature- Beyond

My favorite 4 would be: Pagoo The Railway Children All of a Kind Family Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin Other than maybe 2 books, I have read all the read alouds from all three sets to my kids! These are all great books and you can't go wrong. Picking fantastic books is one of Carrie Austin's gr...

Re: How to assign grades for work in high school

I am in the same boat as my oldest will be a ninth grader next fall. I am not worried about grading the "objective" subjects like math, but I already know that, for me, it is worth it to pay someone else to do the grading for my daughter's writing. She loves to write but gets upset if I critique her...

Re: Excited after big order!

I am almost in the same shoes as you - gearing up to purchase World Geography for my oldest. She has done all the guides from Little Hands on up (except Preparing). I can hardly imagine homeschooling without HOD - it has been such a blessing to us also! But I had one question after reading your post...

Re: Working in Beautiful Girlhood

Personally, I would wait. I am doing it with my 11 year old now and sometimes wish I was doing it with my 13 year old instead (did it with her 2 years ago). Some of the topics seem more relevant to a teenager than a pre-teen.

Calculator use in Principles of Mathematics/Videotext Algebr

I am surprised by the amount of calculator use in POM Book 1, which my sixth grader is doing. My eighth grader is in Module E of Videotext Algebra and has never used a calculator for math. She routinely does difficult arithmetic in Videotext on paper. I am concerned that my next child won't be able ...

Re: Bigger or Preparing

One of my children struggled with reading, and I felt she was not ready for the reading in Preparing. (She was also near the end of the ERs at that time). I plowed ahead since she had fully done all the earlier guides. She needed help with the history readings in the beginning (especially if they we...

Re: I need some ideas for boys

jellybeanmum - I just had to laugh about your trampoline blowing away into your neighbor's yard! We had something similar happen to ours. We have this huge trampoline and one day my kids went outside and said it was gone. I couldn't believe it until I went out there to see for myself. It took us a l...

Re: How to encourage a boy to slow down, think, and be caref

Wow! Thank you for your thoughtful replies! Julie, I hadn't looked at that written narration list for a LONG time, and I had forgotten how much helpful advice is on there for spelling. I will start using more of those options for spelling. I see there is nothing on there really about how much "sense...

How to encourage a boy to slow down, think, and be careful..

..without a lot of negativity? I am especially troubled by my son's copywork and written narrations (he is in Unit 34 of Preparing so almost done). In his copywork I see: -numerous spelling mistakes -sloppy handwriting (I know he can do better) -occasional skipped words or even phrases In his narrat...
