Re: Placing A Dyslexic Child
With the amount of writing he is already doing it looks like he places in Beyond. Using a whiteboard for a lot of the writing is fine. Beyond has daily spelling and copy work which it looks like you are already doing through your reading program. So, in addition to that I think there is only a once ...

Re: Map work w/ visual spatial challenges
I let my ds trace the maps as well. He has CP and writing/drawing is difficult for him. Regarding understanding distance, I believe one of the upcoming activities in Bigger (we are in week 9) is measuring the length of a room and then drawing a scale representation on paper using an inch as a foot. ...

Re: Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you Carrie, Julie, and your families. I am always so grateful for your faithful dedication to and sacrifice for the ministry of HOD. Thank you for being willing vessels that Christ uses to share the gospel message. Merry Christmas to all of you fellow HOD families! It is a privile...

Re: People of Color in Bigger?
We read Phillis Wheatley as our biography read aloud and loved it. She was the first famous female poet in the colonies. We are only 7 units into Bigger so I can't speak to what comes later.

Re: Is it time to uncombine? UPDATE!
Thanks for all the responses! I am going to try the 1/2 speed schedule I posted earlier and see how it goes. We school 5 days a week (sometimes 6). If I need to change spelling and math to daily I will, but I am hopeful every other day will work out for the short term. Julie, I am glad you all are r...

Re: Is it time to uncombine? UPDATE!
After quite a bit of pondering and praying, I have put together a 1/2 speed schedule for dd: Day 1 - left side of Bigger with 1/2 page cursive and ETC. Also Storytime daily with ds and DITHOR orally as time allows. Day 2 - right side of Bigger finishing 1/2 page of cursive and completing grammar ora...

Re: Is it time to uncombine? UPDATE!
She is missing the vowels in her spelling. I have my children clap the word as they say it when they are missing vowels. If the word has 2 claps, there are 2 syllables, and each syllable needs at least one vowel. This has been really helpful at our house. There is also, definitely, just a point whe...

Re: Is it time to uncombine? UPDATE!
She is just really so young for Bigger. Bigger is where it starts being serious school and with my oldest, who was 7.5 when we started, it was just too much and she wasn't quite ready for the jump. Also again, I didn't really know where we were going and so I didn't prepare her well. I did a better...

Re: Is it time to uncombine? UPDATE!
Personally, I would just give her time to grow this year. My suggestion would be to just focus on the 3R's for your DD and not worry about anything else. She is still young, so if she loves playing with her younger siblings then I would let her do that. My DD has an amazing imagination and LOVES to...

Re: Is it time to uncombine?
Yes, I totally agree! I am finding it somewhat of a relief to just focus on her now, as we can feel so good ds is all figured out and thriving! I want that same result for dd. So, could you please share specifically about your dd's reading (what is she reading for DITHOR), writing (how much can she...

I believe they are two different books. We haven't gotten that far in the guide yet, but I just checked the Bigger packages on the website and the science book Thomas A. Edison is different than the extension package one. HTH.

Re: Is it time to uncombine?
It's been a few weeks and I thought I would update for those interested or facing a similar situation at some point. We tried 1/2 speed for a few weeks and it was not a good fit for my oldest ds. It was not enough. School was taking until 11 or 11:30 even at 1/2 speed because we were constantly wait...

Re: Using Beyond w/almost 8yo
I kind of differ from these other ladies (perhaps) in that I think when you get to Bigger doing R side of one guide and L side of another no longer works. Because the R side isn't just the 3R's anymore in Bigger, storytime and daily science are also in there. I guess you could just not do the daily...

Re: Using Beyond w/almost 8yo
Hi all! I am just wondering... if I want to use Beyond next year with a 2nd grader who will turn 8 a quarter way into the year (so late fall b-day and older for his grade), would I just add the right side of Bigger and be pretty much good to go? Instead of the right side of Beyond? Thanks!! That's ...

Re: a Zippy 7 yr old girl
I am having faith that what lies ahead in the program will prepare her (and my son) to be successful in the world, academically and spiritually. :) So, I should stop looking for other programs to plug in, right ;) HOD is a complete program. You do not need to add anything. When we started with HOD,...
