Re: DITHOR HELP!

I would check their reading levels as well. Independent reading levels are higher than instructional reading levels (by one year about), so that would make a difference. Also my son hates to write but loves to draw, so in the boxes where drawing could be an option, I let him do that in the workbook....

Re: Singapore 3A/3B - should I buy the textbooks?

Yes the guide tells you. He just usually gets out both and refers to the text if he needs to. But he's a minimalist, so if he can figure it out on his own, he doesn't crack open the text. :D

Re: Foreign Language- HOW??

We do song school Latin and really enjoy it. Right now we're almost into Latin for Children for my 4th grader, so he does it with the Dvd at the end of the day with headphones on while the little ones rest. I also have 3 guides to make it through. We start at 8:30 and end at 1:30 with 1/2 hr recess ...

Re: Teaching LHTH out of order

If I remember right, I believe the rhymes for the letters go with the Bible stories, which are in order. So that part would be out of order.

Re: Singapore 3A/3B - should I buy the textbooks?

I buy them so the kids can be as independent at math as possible. I'm good at math but understand everyone learns math in different ways, so I don't want to narrow each lesson to "my way ". I like the texts for having the way this program teaches and if my child doesn't understand, I teach from anot...

Re: Chronicles of Narnia?

The audio says 8 and up but we've read it aloud with the family (not quite as scary then) and my 4 year old enjoyed them, although they were way above his head. My 7 year old liked them best at the time.

Re: End of guide certificate?

No but our family does do a celebration. We let the child who is finished choose something fun for the family to do together, like going to a restaurant or a movie or bowling or something. It is a tradition in our house now that the kids look forward to. :)

Re: Reading Break?

I have found at that age it's good to keep rearing without long breaks. I plan on doing our summer library reading program and to loosely continue reading lessons for all. I wouldn't worry about formal school, especially since the others wouldn't be used to it. I imagine you will have your hands ful...

Re: If you run several guides at once

I have done both. This year I do storytime each individually for a special end to the day. Last year I did my oldest at the beginning of rest time where all could hear. I like doing it individually but boy it takes a lot of schoolday, depending on the book. I'm curious as to what others do!

Re: With embarrassement, i ask for help for placement

Boy that is tricky! Could you finish up where you left off and go 5 days a week, using the leftover day for a finish up day? Are her expectations clear what she needs to do and when to stop? (I have OCD in my family and when to stop is a hard thing to learn.) Is she being independent with her studie...

Re: LA in Bigger for the extension?

It is really easy. Has he had any grammar? I guess you could always start him in the level 2 book where you think he needs to start and finish up if necessary, but maybe have level 3 on hand for when he's done. It starts really basic, like God made the words, God made sentences, everything has order...

Re: Need help placing my 13, 11, and 9 yo girls (lengthy)

Patty you have a lot of good info here, but I would guess your best guess is to call HOD and ask them. I think your situation is more complicated than most on the board and with higher ages. :) They would be able to give the best advice!

Just to pop in again, I think I remember reading on the site that they don't answer placement questions over email because of the amount of details needed. Only phone inquiries.

Re: Writing in PHFHG question

I use it for 3rd. There is an age range there, so whether or not one chooses to use it for 3rd or 4th just depends on where their child's skills are! Writing is a big part of it, so if the sample week looks good for where your child is at, you're good to go!
