9th Grade Physical Science?

Our state college board requires an entire year of Physics or Physical Science and an entire year of Chemistry... and "Intro" to either doesn't cut it. We still have to do a year of Biology and a year of another "Advanced" science on top of it. Since we aren't starting Algebra until 9th grade, movin...

Desks in bedrooms?

My boys (10.5yo starting CTC AND 9yo halfway through Bigger) have asked to have individual desks in their bedrooms so they can focus better on their independent work. We are currently using 2 separate desks in a shared living area. One child is a noise-maker (whistles, hums, talks to himself, etc.) ...

Re: Help! I've got to change something, but what?

If you were to look at the placement chart with fresh eyes, where does yds place? Where does ODS place? That might help determine the best way to move forward. Thanks. I hadn't looked at that in a while. Here's where I would place them by category: ODS: Reading - CTC or RTR Writing - CTC Grammar - ...

Help! I've got to change something, but what?

We've been with HOD since LHTH. My boys are 19 months apart in age, but I kept them apart due several reasons. Primarily, YDS had some verbal issues and refused to talk very much. He depended on ODS to speak for him, and ODS was always quick to oblige. I couldn't ever assess YDS's progress because I...

Re: Free National Park Pass - 4th graders

I just (re)found the FAQs. Since links usually don't work, google "every kid in a park faq general". It's the PDF put out by Jackson County. HTH!

Free National Park Pass - 4th graders

Today is the first day you can sign up your fourth grader for Every Kid in a Park, a free pass for fourth graders (and their families) to visit any federal park, forest, wildlife refuge, and waters until August 31, 2016! We just signed up my fourth-grader and it took about 5 minutes to do the activi...

Love it!

BHFHG - Traveling with "Prediction Chain" for Storytime?

Units 17-20 of Bigger use a "Prediction Chain" in the Storytime lesson. I love the idea, but we will be visiting grandpa during those weeks, and I don't know that a paper chain will survive the travel. Any ideas for a compact, travel-friendly version? :)

Re: Traveling tips for Beyond, Bigger, and Preparing?

Thank you so much, ladies. Here's what I'm thinking for this first two-week visit (by car for this particular trip): 3-Ring Binder : contains needed printouts for two weeks ( HOD units removed from TM? :( , Cheerful Cursive/poetry copywork pages, science experiment sheets, hymn lyrics, poems, Bible ...

Re: Traveling tips for Beyond, Bigger, and Preparing?

Thanks so much for the ideas. I've got one of those zip-up 3-ring binders just sitting unused on a shelf. Perfect idea! Putting the songs on an MP3 player would make it easier to listen to the songs for travel, school, and everyday as we're going about our day. Brilliant! I suppose I could get an ex...

Traveling tips for Beyond, Bigger, and Preparing?

My father-in-law LIVES for my boys (his only grandkids), and though we live 1000 miles away, he visits us often and calls the boys daily. But he is very sick now, and the doctors told him yesterday that he probably has a few months to three years at best. Therefore, it looks like the boys and I will...

DS has tears of joy!

When my ODS went through BLHFHG, he never said anything negative about "Morning Bells" (he's just happy whenever I'm reading something to him), but he never said he liked it or wanted to delve deeper through discussions about the readings. Now that YDS (7) is in Bigger, I've once again read Morning ...

Dictation words

We just started dictation yesterday (BHFHG) and I have a quick question. When we do the extension words at the bottom of the passage, do we read them out one by one, or read one line of words at a time? I've been doing one word at a time, but I want to check before we get too far into this! Thanks.

Re: How do you keep from oversupplementing?

I'm squeezing in extras where I can. We "study" one composer for 6 weeks by listening to his/her music during breakfast/supper. We do a different artist every 6 weeks by using his/her artwork as the lock screen and background on the shared school iPad. Educational music (skip counting songs, Wee Sin...
