Today the 20th is the last day to vote for HOD in the 2020 Practical Homeschooling Awards!

Hey ladies! Looks like you can still vote today, as in March 20th! I was thinking the last day was March 19th, due to the note at the top of the ballot that all ballots must be completed and received before March 20 (see italics below), but it looks like they are still accepting ballots today becaus...

I have a question. Are we able to post a link to a vlog?
Yes, Mike said that would be just fine! Happy "vlogging!" - can't wait to see it! :D

Re: Bigger Hearts Notebook

I’m planning on doing some portions of Bigger Hearts with my 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th graders next year. Would you buy each their own notebook? When I went through Bigger with my older kids there wasn’t a notebook available. I’m familiar with them because we used them with the older guides. Welcome to...

Re: Comparing PHFHG and CtC

Thank you Carrie and Julie for your replies. Julie, the in depth comparison of PHFHG and CtC was a big help! I will definitely be doing PHFHG next year. I think it will be a good stepping stone for written narrations and independent work. Considering that my ds just asked today if he could do "oral...

HOD Weekly Check-Ins... Let's revive them!

Hi ladies! While the HOD Message Board was being revised, the weekly check-ins were harder to do. Now that the board is up and running again, it would be great to start sharing Weekly Heart of Dakota Check-Ins with each other again!!! Taking a moment to share about your HOD week is a great way to ce...

Re: Math help

Hi Sally! How exciting you are bringing your son home again to homeschool with HOD! Math can be a tough nut to crack for 6th grade students, can't it? If Abeka hasn't been such a good fit, I think it makes sense to try something else. Singapore Math, which HOD recommends, is often considered a year ...

Re: Organizing HOD Things

We have a farm office/homeschool room, but everyone works in the living room or their own bedroom. We use recycling buckets for the books they are currently using, to haul them around, and have Ikea shelves in the office that hold their buckets. Ideally they are to be put back in the office every d...

Week-in-Review: Feb. 24-28

Hi ladies! I loved posting weekly check-ins for many years, and then photobucket crashed! I missed posting pictures, and alas, my weekly check-in posts faded away. Well, Photobucket has apparently had some revisions, and I believe it is now working again. I snapped some pictures this week and though...

Re: Organizing HOD Things

Julie, Great thoughts! :D I ended up having to get a narrow bookshelf to put right next to the table where my older boys were working. I really didn't want to to do it, as it made the room a bit more cluttered. However, it was the only way I could truly get their many books and science supplies, et...

Re: Organizing HOD Things

Good luck! In our old house, the school books where in one of the two main rooms on the main floor of the house. I hated it because if company came over on the spur of the moment, it was always a mess! We now have a dedicated school room. My husband is still working on building bookshelves/cabinets...

Organizing HOD Things

Each son has his own work area, which works great! Emmett has a table, lamp, and chair to do his work in the living room. Riley does his work at the dining room table, about 5 feet away from Emmett. Wyatt does his work in his room and at the addition table. I have each of their HOD books labeled, an...

Re: How to Conquer the End-of-day Correcting Pile-up

To prevent the correcting pile-up, I like to correct work at the beginning of each teaching block of time I have planned with each child. So, for example, during my first teaching block with Emmett, we go through/correct his Bible Quiet Time, his State Study, and his Independent History Study. Then,...
