When not to worry about spelling and handwriting?
My daughter is 7, almost 8. We just finished Beyond and are starting Bigger and DITHOR. She varies as to whether she "likes" to write. She will sometimes write for fun--lots of notes and pictures with text, sometimes journals and even stories. She will sometimes complain about writing for school. Co...

Re: Does LHFHG develop listening skills?
It definitely will develop listening skills over time, but it may start out with frustration, like you envision. I strongly recommend getting the coloring book that was made to go History for Little Pilgrims. There won't be a picture for every day, but it will give you one "active listening" resourc...

Re: Thinking of Skipping to Preparing for Next Year
Just a thought--what if your 11 y.o. read the history in Bigger to your 8 y.o.? You could be there with them as they did this, and possibly even alternate reading paragraphs with him. That would solve the problem of the little brother getting time with mom while the big brother is being sent off to ...

You could also get the teacher's manual from Singapore for 1A and 1B. That also has hands-on activities.

Re: What is Earlybird Kindergarten like?
Singapore Math does encourage the development of mental math skills in general, but I don't think it's a big part of the Earlybird Kindergarten that HOD uses with LHFHG. I happen to have 2A in front of me. First of all, regarding manipulatives, the LHFHG manual gives you a hands-on, manipulative typ...

Re: emerging readers ?
Well, the artwork in it is sort of unsophisticated--quickly sketched would be one way of putting it. The content begins with God creating the world (of course! it's a Bible!) and the very short sentences made it seem baby-ish to her. Also, each section is followed by questions you ask your child, li...

Re: Singapore math
It sounds like Carrie might have placed her when she was talking to you at the convention... that's great! I'm really excited to meet Carrie at our state convention in a couple weeks. :) As far as Singapore Math, we're really enjoying it. The math, plus the activities in the Beyond guide are just en...

Re: emerging readers ?
The questions, as well as a schedule which is useful for pacing, are in the back of Beyond. Other than the Early Reader's Bible, which my daughter loathed with a passion  , we have really enjoyed them. We just skipped over it. I think if I'd thought about it, I would have gotten the other choi...

Re: R&S 3 Who vs Whom
The nominative case is the subject of the sentence. The subject is the noun that does the verb. Example: The dog bit the man. Dog is the subject and is in the nominative case. The objective case is the object of the sentence. The object has things done to it. Like the man in the above example. He di...

Re: Long Days
Keri sounds a bit like me - she likes to read and probably gets a lot out of it (I'm inferring this from you saying that the discussion takes a long time), but she doesn't read fast. That's not a bad thing! I can skim if I have to, but I don't enjoy rushing through big chunks of reading. I think let...

Re: Took The Plunge- Please Pray
I wanted to add a "second" to the encouragement to use the program as written--not to tweak or change any more than you have to. I don't think stretching it out schedule-wise is a big problem. But I know last year I tweaked--and SKIPPED  --parts of LHFHG, because I didn't really understand the...

Re: Beyond at half-speed? Anyone else done this?
I can't believe I forgot to say this the first time, but we would also be adding DITHOR next year. She has made leaps and bounds with reading this year and the emerging readers pack definitely would not last us another year.

Beyond at half-speed? Anyone else done this?
Due to a variety of factors, especially illness then morning sickness on my part and a one day a week co-op, we are only on Unit 14 of Beyond. We are really enjoying Beyond and don't want to rush through it. We got through LHFHG last year in part by skipping things if we didn't have time for them, a...

Now I'm so jealous that I don't have anybody old enough to do RtR right now! I want to be the one screaming when boxes arrive!
