Re: What dictionary do you have for your kids to use?

My 8yo dd is in Bigger also. We use the American Heritage Children's Dictionary. There have been a few words that weren't in there, so we also have the American Heritage Student Dictionary, which has had every word we've needed. We are quite pleased with both. (We also have the American Heritage Chi...

Re: Question about my 8 year-old in DITHOR

My 8yo sounds very similar. I started the year intending for her to read to me, but it became clear that it wasn't completely necessary. I skim the reading before we sit down for DITHOR and then I ask her to tell me about it. I can pretty well tell if she got everything or not. If not, I have her re...

Re: LHFHG and an independent reader

My almost-6 yo dd got her hands on many of the ERs too (need higher shelves!) and read through them. We're still going through them together and discussing the questions. Honestly, dd seems even more excited for having read the books already. She loves getting to "share" a book with me and often tel...

Re: What would you do? (another placement Q)

Thank you for the replies. Sorry to be slow in betting back to you all! Mom23, your words were very wise and helped me a lot. You are right about the idea of repeating being unappealing to dd. I spoke with her about the possibility and she was pretty down about it. She was really excited to move on ...

What would you do? (another placement Q)

Hi Ladies. I came to you all with the issue of placement for my 2 daughters a few months ago, and I thouhgt I'd made a decision, but now I am having second thoughts. As school approaches (Monday!), I find myself almost dreading the schedule we have to keep to get everything done in a day. I am alrea...

Re: chore charts and schedule

I am certainly not Julie, but I have studied her charts a lot and love them! I just posted my own attempt at body check / room check charts over in the schedules thread. If they would be helpful to you, I'd be happy to share.

Blessings,
Erica

Re: Let's share our schedules!

Hello Ladies! I don't know if this will be of help to anyone, but I thought I'd share in case. I know that I have gained SO much from reading about how others structure their time and tasks. When I read Julie's schedule, I saw that she has something called Body Check and Room Check for her dc. I'm n...

Re: The Reading Lesson Pace

As we were going through a lesson, dd would highlight any words/sentences she had trouble with. Then each day we would quickly go back over all the highlighted material for the whole lesson, then do our new pages (she was up to 4 new ones per day by the end). It worked well for us!

Re: Can one run 5 guides??

Thanks so much! I'm so glad to hear that there are families out there who use separate guides for 5 or more children and thrive in the process. That is very encouraging! I also appreciate the suggestion as to how to make dd7's year more interesting if she did end up repeating Beyond (change science,...

Re: Can one run 5 guides??

Thanks for your replies. Let me ask you all this. If I were to combine my two oldest, how would I go about it? What guide would I use? If I could figure that out, it would really help me know if combining is the way to go. It seems like combining is easier to pull off if a family comes to HOD down t...

Can one run 5 guides??

Hello! I could really use some wisdom here and I hope somebody has some to share! I have 4 wonderful children and just found out that we are expecting #5 in January :D (yes, it is very early and I normally wouldn't post it on a public forum quite yet, but I really need some help with school decision...

Re: schedule woes

Thanks you SO much to all of you lovely ladies for all of your ideas. I have taken them all to heart. I also appreciate the simple encouragement of knowing I'm not alone! My head knows that, but sometimes my heart can't feel it in the moment. As for how things are going...potty training is working! ...

schedule woes

I am hoping that perhaps some of you can share some wisdom with me. At the beginning of this school year I made a beautiful schedule modeled after Julie's, with blocks of time for each child and specific things for my younger ones to do during each block. It was working so well. However! It has quit...

Re: Reading Lesson and CD usage

We just recently finished TRL and used the CD after the lessons. It worked well and my dd is reading so well! I just wanted to share one thing to be aware of. The book is very clear about how to pronounce each sound, making sure not to add any extra sounds in, but sometimes the CD pronounces it inco...

Re: Teacher's manuals for R&S

We're still in level 2, but I remember reading a thread where Julie said she needed the level 3 teacher's manual because there were daily (I think) review questions in there. She said she started the year without using the TM but later realized it was very much needed. Maybe she will clarify if I'm ...
