Re: We are switching back to Singapore!!!

Then, today, I went back and actually had him take the placement tests! He tested in 4A...right where we left off! Things he learned in CLE with drill and kill, he couldn't remember at all! Oh my goodness! What have I done???? I did it too. No more switching for me. My poor Guinea Pig Emily....

Re: theory of evolution?

He found a book about early man at the library today and said to me "this is what scientists think man looked like". So he knows some of it already, he likes to watch Discovery Channel. Oh yes. We have quite a few encyclopedias and science books that speak as if evolution is fact, and the discovery...

Re: theory of evolution?

That's good to know. yeah, Michael has learned a lot about dinosaurs. And actually said today he wondered about that scientists say dinosaurs were here before humans and the Bible says they were here at the same time. I thought we should wait to actually teach the theory too Ken Ham's The Answers B...

Re: I need help. Bad first day.

Also used the timer for math today , worked well. I had to tell him if we do this that he may not skip problems, must do them in order. Because he skipped over the mult. problems. So we later tossed a small football back and forth and review the times tables. I think that this is brilliant! Let him...

Re: I need help. Bad first day.

Yes, so glad things like physical activity are helping.

We added an abacus to our math work, just to get the understanding down. Emily didn't like other manipulatives (especially MUS) but an abacus is used by math champions so I decided it would be a good idea. It does seem to help when we use it.

Re: I need help. Bad first day.

This is tough to reply to because for us it is very complicated. Finally one day a few weeks ago I told DH I give up and started bawling. I cried for the whole next day. DH had been there and heard our entire interaction... her terrible attitude, not looking at the paper, not sitting up, etc. and he...

The Beyond books should work better IMO they are not too advanced.

My kids don't like the Burgess books either. :?

Re: HOD/CM way of spelling with dyslexic child?

I think I'm really reluctant to try dictation since she has such trouble just getting a word that I spell orally for her written down correctly. Oh duh, maybe if I pay attention! Emily had trouble with this too. I had to have her do a handwriting program (Zaner-Bloser) a year behind and I also supp...

Re: HOD/CM way of spelling with dyslexic child?

Does she need help with handwriting? We had to get some handwriting help before we could do any kind of dictation. See if she struggles to write a word from dictation if you dictate each letter. Then you have more than spelling to address.

If this is a problem then I have more suggestions for you.

Welcome Annette! I have ADD. We would get along great. I am looking forward to HOD scheduling everything for me. Re: HOD/CM way of spelling with dyslexic child?

From my research on dyslexics (my son is), I have heard and read that only an Orton Gillingham system will really help with reading and spelling. I just wanted to say that there are many to choose from. Wilson and Barton are not the only ones. We have used How to Teach Spelling from the OG website,...
