Re: Phonics

I agree with these other ladies and would urge you to relax and not make it a battle. When he's ready, it will come easily. There's no standard or needed pace for it. This is the benefit of homeschooling! They don't have to be at someone else's pace, just at their own pace. If it becomes a big battl...

Re: Science question

I don't think you even necessarily need the Rev to Rev guide to do the science. The kit is complete and you could just do one lesson each day (quizzes and such as they come). My daughter is loving it because it's so hands on! Hopefully yours will too.

Re: Dual Enrollment Vs. HOD all the way?

If you want your child to experience deadlines, grades, etc then there's no reason why you can't do that at home. You will have to be disciplined and organized too, but you can do it. If your child is college bound for sure and knows what field they want to study, some college classes in high school...

Re: 1st year doing HOD as a full time SAHM - what would you

Oh I am also so happy for you! And I can relate because I was involved in a very time-consuming ministry leadership position with our church and after feeling very burned out and seeing how much I neglect my husband and children because of it, I gave my notice in May and plan to serve one more year!...

Re: Dictation woes

Ummm... I struggle to think of what could be a spelling program that an artsy, creative child would enjoy. It seems to me that something more drawn out and rule based would be even more disliked and a struggle for both of you. You say you already see that it works. If the child doesn't have any lear...

Re: Understanding the differences between HOD and Sonlight

I have only used HOD all the way through, my oldest is going into 7th and Rev to Rev. I have a couple of friends who use SL so here are just my "HOD-ie" perspective on some of the differences. HOD does a lot of activities and hits people of different learning styles. My 2nd born does not enjoy readi...

I think he might be bored with it if he repeated it. Just my 2c. I also think it might be too easy for a 12 year old in Rev to Rev.

Re: placement question...am I crazy??

If you take a 5 day guide and do it 4 days a week, just continuing on the next day for your next day of school (which is what I do) then it takes 1.3 school years. There are about 9 units left at the end of the year and it will take you about 12 weeks to do them. Because I do this, all of my kids us...

Re: placement question...am I crazy??

I replied to your other post too. So in answer to some of the things in this one: Separate guides is really so much easier in so many ways, and as they move up into those older guides it will be easier! I can't imagine my kids having to share their guides with as much independent work as they do. I'...

Re: bigger and preparing at the same time

I can just chime in and say that running those two guides at the same time is really a lot, especially when you have several other kids to manage as well. I JUST finished Beyond and Preparing with my two daughters and switched up to CTC and Bigger. My 7YO was really ready for Bigger (she is almost 8...

Re: Juggling multiple kids- newbie question

I have 5 kids, who are now 12, 10, 7, 5, and 2. The placement chart is your key. However HOD recommends if your children place in back to back guides, especially in the younger guides, that you try combining in the lower guide and adding on challenge or extra subjects for the older one. Back to back...

Re: LOVE Heart of Dakota SO MUCH!!!

Thanks for sharing Lisa. I feel the same way. HOD has been such a blessing to my family, even with them all in different guides so far. It's so easy to use and yet so thorough and helps each child grow and learn so much! It sounds like you had a stressful year, and we actually moved last year too an...

Re: What about eighth grade?

If your child is doing well with what they have been doing and is right at level then you should just keep going. As Stephanie mentioned you can just finish up early and graduate them early, or have them take college classes for that last year of high school (maybe even some before that). As to what...

Re: Book substitutions for LHFHG in place of Thornton Burges

Tara, My oldest is also not an auditory learner and was slow to learn to read as well. She wasn't very good at the narration activities or at answering what had happened in the books, but she enjoyed listening to them and got excited about hearing them so I knew she was catching something even thoug...
