Re: Question about Bigger

One thing to consider is the fact that the guides are made to increase and build on skills each year. So going backwards will not only set your boys back in terms of skill development, but it will make a huge jump from your Bigger year to your CTC year. I would suggest you do CTC and begin at 1/2 sp...

Re: HOD Graduate succeeding in college!

Kudos to your son! That is wonderful. I am going to read this post to my son because he doesn't particularly enjoy written narrations. :D Having said that,I want to add further encouragement because the improvement in his writing over the years has been nothing short of dramatic. My son absolutely c...

Re: The case for age range on manuals?

I can't speak for Carrie, but in my mind the age range is very important for the younger guides because like the other poster mentioned, it guides the age of the child when they land in the more advanced guides. I have found with my children that academic skills at the younger ages were poor predict...

Re: 10 yr old boy not ready for CtC

My son is also dyslexic and we are in unit 8 of CTC. He will be 12 in November, so you can see we had to slow way down as his dyslexia is quite severe. I would suggest going 1/2 speed, at least for awhile and read the history to him or find audio. I know the audio learning is harder for some, but he...

Re: Considering HOD

Welcome to HOD! One thing to consider as you contemplate where to place your boys is the fact that HOD is not built like many of the curriculums where you follow a history cycle with the whole family. Each HOD guide steps up skills and has a recommended age/skill range that would correspond to appro...

Re: Phonics

If you son just turned 6, yes, he is on the young side. My oldest is a scholar (and a great reader now), but his reading was slow to take off. He was 7 or 7 1/2 before he was reading well.I used The Reading Lesson with both of my boys and "slow and steady" was our motto. I would just take a certain ...

Re: First Year Homeschooling

I would not combine them in Little Hearts because the next year you would have a young 5 yr old in Beyond, which is not advisable at all. Given your middle won't be 4 until September, and therefore a very young 5 next year, I would do Little Hands to Heaven with her at 1/2 speed and stretch it out t...

Re: Placing Children New to HOD

I have two children who are 19 months apart, but very different in skill and ability to do school, but we have found our path in HOD. My oldest just started MTM and my younger is in Preparing, so they are 3 full guides apart despite the closeness of age. I just want to encourage you that HOD can def...

Re: Please! Need Advice for Beyond

I would just start over with The Reading Lesson and take it at whatever speed he needs. I used TRL for both of my boys and it was a great way to teach them to read. You have been through a lot and using a resource that is easy, yet thorough, is just what you need. I hope things will settle down for ...

Re: Guide Placement for Dyslexic Son

I have a 10 1/2 yr old dyslexic/dysgraphic that just started Preparing 2 weeks ago. We are going at a slower speed (taking 6 days per unit) and we are not aiming for the independence as written in the guide right now. So far it is going very well. He is doing two vocab words for each unit and comple...

Re: Thiking this through (ie. Planning)

I have been pondering your situation and have attempted to answer twice now. I am going through the guides with one child who took off from the beginning and one who has always been slower. My child who took off has always done well, but we were at the lower end of the guide and I actually slowed hi...

Re: Choosing Studied Dictation level

I found this in a post by Julie: As far as dictation, there are wonderful important instructions at the start of each level of dictation passages to follow. As far as placement, in a good placement, a student is probably missing a passage a week or two. If they never miss a passage for months on end...

Re: Standardized Testing

I have only used the Iowa skills test so can't really compare tests. I just wanted to say I tested one of our boys at the end of 3rd grade and the other at the beginning of 2nd grade (both use HOD exclusively) and they both scored in the 98th percentile in science so I wouldn't worry about that. I u...
