So far we're finding everything we need in it.

Re: Spelling Retention

Julie, Thanks for taking the time to reply. I wasn't clear in my original post. I quizzed him on the 1st grade words (during the summer) and where he stopped getting all of them right is where we started last year. So, I only did a years worth of words last year, but from 2 lists. We do all the acti...

Spelling Retention

DS2 is 8 and is in BHFHG and we are loving it! However, spelling is testing me. Last year, in Beyond we finished 1st grade words and got about 1/2 of the second grade words done. The plan was to finish 2nd grade words and then move to dictation. I decided to review the 2nd grade words the first week...

Re: Have you named your H'school?

Yes, a name is required by our state. If you don't provide one they use your last name and "school", which is ok, but we wanted something different. Using the theme I wanted (letting your light shine) we came up with a name that we all liked.

Re: Help?

So happy your husband and you were able to agree on this. We used little hearts for 1st grade - like many of the pp kiddos, he placed into Beyond, but in some areas was in Little - Little Hearts was the best choice for us - what a wonderful year! We are going into Bigger this fall for 3rd grade. For...

Re: NC and record keeping

Thanks Ladies - this is all very helpful. I do keep a binder with his work, and it is so nice to have. My manual will be my lesson plan -it is anyway :) . I'm going to either use a monthly calendar and jot the unit / date with extras or add the date in my manual. As for their recommendation about ke...

NC and record keeping

Happy summer to all! I'm wondering what other moms do for record keeping. I've searched and read similar topics on the board. I found an older post where someone kept a calendar with unit / day and date along with any extras and it seemed like a good idea. We live in NC and have pretty 'easy' hs law...

Wow - sounds great! We don't have a designated room - we use the kitchen, but it works for us.

Great Meeting You

Carrie and Julie,
It was so wonderful to get the opportunity to meet both of you at the NCHE conference. Thank you for the advice and encouragement! We loved Beyond so much and now I'm looking forward to Bigger in the fall.

Re: getting life in order to homeschool

For us, I've found that routine is better than schedule. Also, my biggie is asking the Lord to guide my to do list as part of my morning prayer time. I struggled with getting the house under control for a while - I would either be to ridged and exhausted or too lax. I read a lot on organization, but...

Re: Anyone ever NOT finished the whole guide/curriculum?

I wouldn't recommend just not finishing. You could either condense or use the remaining weeks as a review in the fall before beginning the next guide. (I think Carrie suggested using it as a review?) That was originally my plan, but ds has worked so hard that we won't have much to do, so I've re-eva...
