Re: Finishing Abeka 1, Starting Beyond
Julie, you are such a HUGE help!! Thank you! I thought if I used Beyond, I could have my son do all of his copywork in cursive, so he wouldn't just breeze thru it. Where he struggles is thinking up his own sentences when trying to write a short story. For example; he had to write a short story on Bu...

Re: Need Advice For 2nd Grade Beyond!
Robin, I'm so glad you asked this question. Our ps introduces grammar in the 1st grade and a lot of it in the 2nd grade, so I felt like my son is way behind. But after reading your question and the responses, made me feel so much more at ease!!!! Thanks for asking the question so the rest of us coul...

Finishing Abeka 1, Starting Beyond
My 7 1/2 yr old son has just about completed the Abeka 1st grade curriculum. He should have been in second grade this year but after viewing Abekas first grade program, I held him back (he completed Kindergarten in public school 2 years ago but I didn't do a full curriculum program with him last yea...

Hi ladies,
Just saw the post and I'm an early planner too! Is Singapore changing their math program and that's why you're wanting to buy the books now????
Blessings,
Pam

Re: workboxes/blogs?
In February, I went to Sue Patricks, Workbox conference and it was more than I expected! One key note that she kept stressing was to ONLY use clear, see thru boxes. She it was for psychological reasons that kept the student motivated. Many moms that were there said their college student uses these c...

Re: "the reading lesson" or "reading made easy" ?
I tried using RME with my son but it ended up in a disaster. There was way too much busy work for a parent to set up before hand but I also felt the gray, black and dotted lines (the way you wrote out the letters and words) were too confusing. We stuck with our Abeka phonics which has been a tremend...

Re: atlas that has it all?
One resource I have for maps is www.yourchildlearns.com . It allows you to print maps according to what you are looking for. I've never used it (haven't had the need yet but I'm sure I'll need it soon) but hopefully it will help you out!

Re: 2nd Grade: Should I switch math
Thank you all for your responses! I made a BIG goof though!! Last year, I ordered Beyond (the whole kit and Kaboodle) and found that I have Singapore 2B math. So I went thru it in detail with my husband and compared it to Abeka. What I found was Abeka 1st grade to Singapore 2B (is the 2 for 2nd grad...

Beth,
I'm so glad you posted this question because I, too, thought about skipping Beyond (went thru it a bit but mainly schooled with Abeka this year) next year but I think those who responded put me at peace for following thru Beyond first. Thanks for posting this question!!!

We had an earthquake on Easter!!
Yesterday, where we live we experience an earthquake. All of our family was sitting around and my oldest son became really excited! He said, "mom, there was an earthquake that rolled away the stone when Jesus went to Heaven!" I've never seen an earthquake excite anyone soooo much!!!

Re: When will you start HOD next fall?
We started the first week of August last year with Abeka and will finish up the 2nd week of May. However, that was with taking breakes when we needed to which was great and added no pressure!!! I think we're going to do a light class schedule thru the summer to work on grammar that Abeka didn't incl...

Re: Reading Level Question
Julie,
What phonics program did you use? My son can read fine if he has a review first of some of the harder blend sounds, so I'm afraid to use the emerging readers that don't include review. Maybe he just needs more time in phonics and maybe even more review time.
