Main idea with story time with IF YOU LIVED 100 YEARS AGO
Just wondering what you all think. yesterday we did Storytime with IF You Lived 100 Years Ago. we put the topic in middle and then 4 boxes with ideas from what we read in each one with lines drawn back to the topic. but then the directions say "color the most important idea". I didn't really see how...

I will say that your 6.5 yr old sounds alot like my now 7.5 yr old. we are doing Beyond with him for 1st grade this year. It is perfect for him. already past the emerging readers and reading his first set of books for each of the genre Carrie has scheduled. He just started the BEta guide of Math-u-s...

Re: I need to talk out loud for a minute....
Just a few cents from me. A kid does not have to go to school to get socialization. what "kind" of friends will she make at school? will it be more detrimental to her if she does not like to be with large groups? I don't think you can force that kind of thing on kids. Myself, growing up, i was very ...

I, too, say that Emerging readers sounds like the next step ,if he can read 1st grade level books. i took a few months break btwn ERs and phonics with my son to make sure he was reading at at that level and then jumped into the ERS.
They are some great books.

Re: Beyond for 1st?
My son was 6yrs and turned 7 in October for 1st grade with Beyond. He has done fine with it. there are times when we will do things orally instead of writing it down. Other than that we do it mostly as written. He finished up ERs at beginning and we have just continued on with our own reading progra...

comma in date (grammar question)
How do you explain the "why" of why you use commas to separate the year from the day when writing say October 29,2003 ? i see it is like Paranthetical phrase (looked up on internet) like somewhere that you would use parenthesis b/c you don't exactly need the info. it is extra info. How do you explai...

Re: Beyond week 20 -ribbons?
i wasn't sure what to do for this and my son is the one who decided. i let him interpret how it should look. what he did was draw a ribbon on red constructin paper, like if someone was giving you a prize ribbon to pin on you. a circle with the 2 bows on top and 2 rectangular parts hanging down. can ...

Re: Training a Lefty
I, too, have a lefty and i have never had a problem with his fine motor skills. I let him write the letters the way he wants and there was a website that i saw once that said lefties will draw letters in a different manner but still get the same letter. it makes sense to me and my son has wonderful ...

Re: Poetry copywork in Beyond and Bigger
My son, who is 7, in 1st grade, just copies a few sentences. Nothing fancy. he doesn't always finished the whole poem. He also has very nice writing. for the last few units though he wold rather copy a few sentences from a book either from story-time or his reading. i am fine with it . Actually the ...
