Re: Beyond for a 9 yr old?

I think it's just Astronomy and Zoology 3. I don't imagine there will be any more scheduled since those are elementary books and Carrie is now writing middle school guides.

Re: What grade do you consider your 12 year old?

Sorry, I'm threadjacking here a little. If your children were born in April 2001, July 2003 and October 2005, what grades would they be in? I am guessing Grade 5, Grade 3 and Grade 1. If I am wrong could you please correct me. The October 2005 child would be in Kindergarten in my state, because the...

Re: What grade do you consider your 12 year old?

My ds has an August birthday, and he'll be in 7th grade when he's 12. (8 in 3rd, 9 in 4th, 10 in 5th, 11 in 6th, 12 in 7th). I have a September birthday, and I turned 12 just after 7th grade started. I think it's becoming more and more common for parents to hold their dc back a year when they have a...

Re: Didn't Carrie say.....?

I don't know if Carrie said that or not, but Charlotte Mason did. I believe CM wanted children reading everything on their own by about age 9. My oldest (age 9) loves to read, and is quite capable of doing all of her own reading. But, I still read the history aloud to her. Even though she is capable...

Re: strong willed children

Pam- Both my 3yo and 5yo were obviously strong-willed even as infants, so I know how hard that can be. I'm trying to think back and remember what I did then... Really, you just have to be persistant. At 1yo, they really aren't going to listen to "no" that well, even if you swat their hand or whateve...

Re: strong willed children

Yes, thank you for this thread! My 5yo is the definition of strong-willed, and 3yo is a lot like him. They test my patience on a regular basis. On a positive note, they are both really smart, so teaching them is fun. :D (Not that my other children aren't smart, because they are! I've just been notic...

Re: Bible Study

I like to use the Bible study from each guide, since it ties into the history and has age-appropriate questions for discussion. So, when I sit down on the couch with my Beyond child, we read history, poetry, and Bible study all in one block. When I work with my Preparing children, it's the same thin...

Re: DITHOR in addition to storytime box in Bigger?

It is my understanding that you are "supposed" to do both, BUT I know not everyone does. After my dc finish the Emerging Readers, I just let them READ, READ, READ from approved literature (at least 30 minutes per day). My plan is to start a formal literary-anaysis type program in 5th grade. I believ...

Re: Beyond for a 9 yr old?

Adding Apologia Astronomy would be very easy if she wants to at some point. We went through that book last year, and I would just read a section at a time (or more, if they were begging for more!) and we'd do the activities as we came to them. We are now using Botany in much the same way- just a lit...

Re: Needing encouragement...

Sharonb, thanks for your comments...you are so positive! I'm glad I was able to help. I haven't always been this positive, but I've learned that I've got to relax a little and remember that "this too shall pass". I have tried to make schedules many times, but it took so much time and energy to make...

Re: Needing encouragement...

I definitely know how you feel! To answer your last question, my younger dc do have free time when I'm working with the older children. I sometimes try to get them set up with a particular activity, but most of the time I tell them to play in the playroom, or sit at the table with playdough or color...

Re: Beyond for a 9 yr old?

I wouldn't worry about the history in Beyond at all; even though Beyond is for 1st/2nd grade, the history books are actually around 3rd grade, if I remember correctly. (You could look at Christian Liberty Press if you really want to know exactly). I do think that Beyond's science would be a bit ligh...

Preparing science- the "Key Idea" gives away the answer.

This morning my dc are working on their science from Unit 3 of Preparing. I was looking at the guide and it occurred to me that if they read the whole box, the Key Idea reveals the answer to the question. With this particular experiment, I'm not that concerned about it, because I think they are alre...

Re: Beyond for a 9 yr old?

As long as she is using the appropriate level of math and English for her son, then it's probably okay. She can always add the extensions next year in Bigger. That being said, I started off this school year with my 1st, 3rd, and 4th graders combined in Beyond. Even with some "homemade extensions", I...

Re: Advice please? :) Considering UN-combining dc ages 7 & 1

Your reasons for wanting to un-combine sound like good ones. We just uncombined 2 weeks ago; I had my 1st, 3rd, and 4th graders all combined in Beyond, because dh wanted me to keep those 3 combined. After talking with dh about why I felt they needed to be placed in the proper programs, he gave his b...
