Re: Just ordered Little Hearts!

We do LHFHG 3-4 days a week (depending on the week) and it has been absolutely no problem for us. We have a Bible study that we go to on Tuesday mornings, and we have been doing that instead of school on that day (although we still do reading and math in the afternoon). Some weeks I just feel like t...

Atlas

Does anyone know what would be a good Atlas for "beginning students." I am looking for one that would be good for my girls starting out. I of course want the information to be accurate and complete, but not neccessarily as "in depth" as what older students or adults would be interested in.

Re: How can I help him with retention?

ugh, that does sound frustrating. My dd certainly doesn't retain everything, but she does pretty well for only being 5, so I don't worry about the little things she doesn't remember. She happens to be a very auditory learner though, so I'm sure that helps. Hummmm, I'd say one really great thing you ...

Re: spelling and kindergarten

I don't think it's something that you need to worry about at this point. It does take time to be able to really clearly hear all the individual sounds in our language. The more practice she has, the better she will get. Just the other day I was having my dd spell "shrunk" and she spelled it "shruk."...

Re: Started LHFHG half-speed

I think half speed is a great way to start a new guide. We started half speed in the beginning too. Now we go full speed and sometimes even wish there was more! :-)

Re: should I hold my son back a year?

Hummmm, well I am blessed to live in MI where I do not have to report ANYTHING, BUT, I think if I were in your situation I would just keep going where I am at in the guide. I would do one of two things for reporting purposes... simply switch and say you ARE doing 2nd grade. Afterall, Beyond is a gui...

Re: I Think I can...

Actually there is one guide prior to Little Hearts. Little hearts is actually geared more for K and 1st, while the first guide, "Little Hands to Heaven" is geared for ages 2-5 and is great for preschool. It has options for younger children and older children.I can definitely see where the thought of...

Re: Reintroduction - coming back to HOD

You and your LO sound a lot like me and my oldest dd! :-) We did LHTH for a bit when she was 3 and then switched to Sonlight. We then came back to HOD when she was 4.5 and started LHFHG. We did the first 3 units SLOWLY and then took a break for summer. Although she has a great attention span, I foun...

Re: Behind? Or ok?

There is NOTHING that says you have to finish the guide in one year! We actually started in the spring. We finished 3 units and then took a break for the summer. We started back this fall schooling 3-4 days per week and we are now working our way through unit 11. We'll get as far as we get through t...

Re: Is BHFHG a good fit for a Wiggly Willie and a Paula Perfect?

Did you check out the placement chart yet? If you haven't, you will definitely want to take a look. Maybe you could share with us where your kids place individually on there... just to make sure you are picking the right guide to start out with for your kiddos. I do know that there are quite a few p...

Re: Placement ? for an early reader

I would definitely go with LHFHG for your main guide. My dd just turned 5 this past August, and we started LHFHG a bit before she turned 5. She DOES have a good attention span, and still, in the beginning the history readings were just a bit of a stretch for her. She does fabulous with the guide now...

Re: Cursive or Manuscript for Kindergarten?

I am teaching manuscript first for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is that everything they READ in the beginning is in manuscript. This way, everything my dd reads and writes is the same. Also, these days cursive is rarely used. YES, I do think it is important to learn, but it can wait in my...

Re: Afternoons, socialization, and a philosophy of life

I also read "The Socialization Trap," and found it to be full of great wisdom. I truly believe that the best place for our children is with their family, and that nothing is really neccessary beyond that. I do put my older dd in activities from time to time, and my little ones do spend time in our c...

Re: Question about Little Hearts for His Glory

I started LHFHG when my dd was 4.5, and honestly, although she could handle it "ok," after 3 units I chose to hold off and wait until she turned 5. I feel like she understands the history, science, etc much more now. She did do well at 4.5, but she was not grasping as much as I really felt she shoul...
