Re: Science for older student in LHFHG/Beyond
I like your option #2, though I wouldn't limit the reading to only biographies. You may want to look ahead at which One Small Square books are scheduled and use others in that series. There are also loads of library books you could use, but of course you would have to screen them since most of them ...

Re: BOX Day!!! +one question :)
I am in a similar boat, got our box and everyone is excited to just start right away. Well, they will just have to wait. When we are done with this year's work, there will be a short break (mostly for my sanity) and then we will get started with our new stuff. I think trying to start something new w...

BOX DAY!!
Technically it was yesterday, but I didn't have time to post. What did we get?? Preparing! It looks awesome and my daughter wanted to dive right in and start reading. I feel so at peace with coming back to HOD!

Re: HOD's way with Singapore math is working!
Another cheer for Singapore form our home. My dd struggles somewhat with memorization of the facts, but she knows the HOW and WHY of what she is doing and I have found that to serve her better. If she can't recall a math fact, she knows how to figure it out. The knowing how is way more important tha...

Re: History in Preparing
Thank-you ladies, and Carrie, for your kind replies. My daughter will be 8 when we start, so at first I'll read the history aloud, but as the year progresses she'll take over doing the reading herself. Of course, I'll continue to read the story-time selections aloud. My daughter is a STRONG reader, ...

History in Preparing
I'm thinking of returning to HOD for the upcoming year. If we return we would be using Preparing for my dd and LHTH with my son. Are the history readings in Preparing meant to be read aloud by the parent, silently by the student, or is it left to the discretion of the parent? Thanks!

I don't live there anymore, but there's tons of history there and the seashore is only 1 1/2 hours away! God Bless...

Re: Handwriting help
mom24boys, The ladies have already given you such good tips. I'll just chime in to say that at age 6 it is not uncommon to have a pretty tight grip on the pencil and to have an incorrect grip. Honestly, in my years of teaching (by the time the kiddos reached third grade) at last half of the class h...

Re: Dithor for 1st grader (almost 7yr)
I have an almost 7yo daughter who is in the middle of her third unit of DITHOR. We use it everyday, there are many days when the lesson is very light or there may be "emergency plans" that are quick and easy. Many times I work with her on her worksheet pages or we do them orally. ahow much your chil...

Re: Help?
I just wanted to sat how wonderful it is that your husband can see the wisdom in switching to a more appropiate program fpr your little guy. Beyond is a stretch and LHFHG will prepare you ds very well for it. It is better that your child be encouraged by school, not discouraged. :D I'm sure you both...

Re: what to do this year for K/1?
Here's one more idea for your combining plan, you could get some of the books from the back of LHFHG (or other appropiate books) for your son to read on his own. It may not seem like such a repeat if your son has some fresh material to read. I like the idea of combining your kids especially since th...

Re: Beyond with a 3rd Grader
It seems as if you have made up your mind to do Beyond, and I think that is great! It is so easy to add in extra readings to the history if that is one of your concerns, we did that by simply going to the library and picking out interesting fact books with lots of pictures and also borrowing some ha...
