Re: Boy books and girl books - your opinion

IMHO, you should choose books that interest you and your children - regardless of the classification. While we tend to choose from the Girl Interest group, we also choose from the Classics and, in some cases, the Boy Interest group. The main idea is to read a good book that is enjoyable. Though some...

Plan for 2nd Grade

Hi all, Well I have nearly decided on our plan for 2nd grade. As the 1st grade starts to wind down I am looking to settle on my 2nd grade choices. I read somewhere that the greatest loss of retention is from 1st to 2nd grade so we will bridge almost seemlessly over the summer and into the 2nd grade ...

Re: Which phonics program would you recommend?

Before, I had tried How To Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, but that was not a good fit for either me or my children at all. It seemed much more unneccessarily complicated. Blessings, I agree about How to Teach Your Child in 100 Easy Lessons. We got to about lesson 10 and stopped. It w...

Re: Which phonics program would you recommend?

We are using Reading Made Easy and love it. Actually we are almost finished. :D We have completed 98 of the 108 lessons and dd is reading very well. She is a reluctant learner so it was a bit scary for me for a while but her reading has really blossomed as we approach the end of the lessons. She is ...

Re: Starting Beyond on Monday, question about storytime...

Congratulations on starting Beyond! We have done both...stretched the bookout to cover the 20 days and also finished faster and added another book. We did that recently with Trumpet of the Swan and added Cricket in Times Square - both are excellent! We are struggling through The Railway Children and...

Re: Handwriting with Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory

We do handwriting with Reading Made Easy and I also added Writing With Ease by Susan Wise Bauer. I love her program and it is new this year. I also add Language Lessons by Jessie Wise (Susan's mother) which is about a 5-10 minute per day grammar lesson. Between the two writing opportunities we are s...

Re: Beyond Storytime - Mystery

Tre-planted, I agree with you . I am sticking with it because I am curious about their father and because I don't want to stop the second book in a row. It is a very difficult read and I am quite an avid reader myself. I am hoping for a good ending as a reward for my efforts. I have thoroughl...

Re: Grammar options with Beyond??

I use Language Lessons by Jessie Wise. She and her daughter, Susan Wise Bauer, wrote the Well Trained Mind books. Language Lessons is for 1st and 2nd grade but could also be used for 2nd and 3rd, I would think..... I also think she has another one for 3rd and 4th...

Re: What do your kids do when they are not homeschooling?

Master's Academy (mafa.net) is a Arts & History academy. Not sure if they have one near you. Ours actually recently broke off and became Artios Academies and there are locations in GA, CO, and CA (I think). They run on either a 4 or 6 year cycle and focus on a particular period of time (this year is...

Re: First Language Lessons for Little Ones

We use Language Lessons by Jessie Wise which is for 1st and 2nd grade. I believe there is another book after this one. I love this book! I also saw Jessie Wise at the SE Homeschool Expo in Atlanta last summer and I fully believe in the need for basic grammer lessons at this age.

Re: Beyond Storytime - Mystery

I will try very hard to stick with The Railway Children but I may also get Phoebe the Spy to read as well. I have to admit I almost fell asleep reading Railway Children but hopefully it will pick up.

Re: Should I Test if not required?

I did the Kindergarten CAT test prior to starting to homeschool in the 1st grade. My dd had attended church preschools and kindergarten prior to coming home. I plan to administer the CAT at the end of each year as a way to see where we are and what we need to work on. You can order it online for abo...

Re: Conference Schedule

I HOPE it is the one in late July - Southeast Homeschool Expo - very large conference. There is a smaller Christian conference in early May, usually the first weekend.

Re: What do your kids do when they are not homeschooling?

Well, we finish much later because we start later... One thing that is a big hit is the local library. We go there when we can (not very often) and they have kid's computers that dd (6) loves to play on. Also just being there and picking out her own books is a big deal. She attends Master's Ac...
