Re: CTC Geography as Independent
Ok! Thank you! Yes, there are travel logs, and she is already doing those on her own as well as the mapping after our reading. I really enjoy the book, but I thought since she suggested reading it on her own, why not let her? She is fully capable of it skill-wise. I like the idea of having her come ...

CTC Geography as Independent
My DD10 in CTC just suggested to me that she could read her geography independently and either narrate her field notes to me or into a recorder for me to listen to later. Is there anyone who has done this? Any reason why we SHOULDN'T do it this way? Those readings can get a little long....

Re: LHTH questions
Oh absolutely, read-alouds are definitely a priority in our house, but I didn't schedule them with LHTH, they just happen naturally throughout the day. We often read together first thing in the morning when he is the first one up. He still naps often, so at nap/quiet time and before bed. I have a lo...

Re: What would you do - children's tummy troubles?
I'm glad you got that all figured out. It's so hard when you don't know. My son is not so obvious. He is 7 but is the size of an average 8 yo despite the fact that he won't eat a fruit or a vegetable. He's in OT and feeding therapy for this. But his tummy issues didn't start until a year ago and so ...

Re: What would you do - children's tummy troubles?
Yes, we've done much of that in the past. I'm very familiar with the Low FODMAP diet. My daughter was diagnosed as fructose intolerant when she was 4 and was put on a Low FODMAP diet only to find out later she probably had a false positive and is now testing positive for celiac. I'm mostly trying to...

Re: What would you do - children's tummy troubles?
What do you do when they have tummy aches? Does it disrupt your day/schedule? Do you have them work through it?

Re: LHTH questions
I'm curious what you find "preachy" about it? I didn't find that at all. I have done LHTH twice through with my son. He has a December birthday, so the first time, we started when he had just turned to 4, did the program from Jan - Aug. Then restarted it last fall for the second time when he was 4 1...

What would you do - children's tummy troubles?
My daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease last year, so she has a legitimate reason for complaining of tummy aches. We went gluten-free as a family but unfortunately gluten still sneaks in somehow. I have typically allowed her to go lay down until it passes, but this can be disruptive if it happ...

Re: Grandpa’s Box
We engaged right away and loved it. My daughter was 8-9 when we were reading it and my then 5 turning 6 yo boy always wanted to listen in. They both ended up making their own "grandpa's box" with the corresponding figurines out of clay.

Re: HOD & Twaddle
Also, when we go to the library, my kids mostly stick to the nonfiction section. I agree that most of the junior fiction is twaddle. And there are some nonfiction books that need to be screened, but for the most they are ok.

Re: LHFHG for an Active 5 YO
The breaks that were part of the school day were very different from play-time after school was done. They would be me directing it rather than them directing it. That makes sense, I'm going to try it! Or, bring your stuffed animals to the living room for reading time. I love this idea! My little g...

Re: LHFHG for an Active 5 YO
You didn't find that the 5-15 minute run-around or play breaks made it hard to come back to school? I would be afraid that he would start something that he doesn't want to stop in order to go back to school. As it is now, he gets very upset if I have to pull him away from something fun he is doing. ...

Re: LHFHG for an Active 5 YO
If I ever think that he's not with me mentally, that's when I know we need a brain break. That's what I've been concerned about....if his moving around would distract him from listening/learning. But you make a good point, that it would actually be a good indication that he needs a brain break. I'v...

LHFHG for an Active 5 YO
I am getting ready to start LHFHG with my very active 5 1/2 YO. He has gone through LHTH twice, although I'm not sure I did it as fully as I should have with two olders to teach. That said, I still think he's ready to start LHFHG if only half-speed. I did LHFHG with my older son who is advanced - ve...

Re: HOD & Twaddle
I will sometimes buy a whole series of a book that HOD only carries one of. For instance, in the new ER2's there is the A to Z Mysteries for letter R. I bought the whole series for my emerging reader. It's possible Carrie only chose one of them for a reason, but I found nothing wrong with most of th...
